I grew up with Penders Sonic comic books and then realized how bad they where. Then I started indulging in them "ironically" and got lost in the irony. So I guess I'm still a fan. Is Lara-Su good? Fuck no! Was it entertaining to read? Fuck yes!
Don't get me wrong, Penders is an idiot and I'm not really trying to defend him. His lawsuits and opinions are stupid, but I honestly don't get the level of hate, the community has for him.
The adult Sonic fandom is super cringe. I don't think Penders stories are worse than that. None of it is canon either, so he didn't ruin anything.
I thought it was kind of cute that he included an autistic character in his clusterfuck sequel, but everyone got offended over it. Why? Because he said that some of the misunderstandings in the community are based on autism? Pretty sure that's true.
I think sometimes he gets shit on just because it's cool to shit on him. As dumb as he his, he's not wrong all the time (excluding politics).

These days, probably not much. The SatAM/Archie crowd is almost a separate entity that is more associated with aging/old school furries (especially since most of them tend to hang out around fan project spaces rather than social media with almost everywhere else) than the modern sonic fandom. Aside from these projects, it tends to get lumped in with '90's furry' stuff (think like Tiny Toons, Rescue Rangers, etc). Modern sonic fans tend to use it as a source for screenshots and to poke fun at the absurdity of some of the situations (or clickbait about 'real sonic lore' when it isn't) rather than the reason for their fandom.

Apart from Sally Acorn, next to nobody in the Sonic fandom bothers with SatAM/Archie anymore. You could probably count the percentage of fans interested in Penders' Retarded Echinda-verse characters as a rounding error.
