That's the part shitheads like Dev like to ignore. Yes, the religious right did their moral panic bullshit and it was mostly what helped the right lose the culture war in the 90s because they became the self-appointed fun police and synonymous with opposition to entertainment of any kind - but it was the left, led by shitheads like Hillary, that tried to legislate the fuck out of this new medium from behind closed doors. When she proposed FEPA, it was an attempt to create a federal version of state legislation that had already been passed, found unconstitutional, and knocked down in several states - including California, but you've seen how establishment pricks are about consent of the governed.

When the Moral Majority went down in flames (good riddance), they were the ones who got blamed, but they couldn't have done it without the support of the establishment left.

The price of freedom, as we say, is eternal vigilance.

I'm not religious but over the past few years I've really come to understand why religion exists and what they actually do well that's helped civilisation over the years.

I view most religion now as essentially a pre-packaged ideological and philosophical framework, with spirituality added in to just kinda pull it together and make it easier to digest for the average person and give a set of principles that also lead to good long-term outcomes. It's essentially a way to allow anyone, regardless of intelligence, to be able to have a basic moral framework that should (in theory) keep them making good decisions and acting ethically.

That's not to say "religion is for the dum-dums who need to be told what to think and athiests are way smarter". It's more just that it makes it a hell of a lot easier to answer questions on ethics and act morally consistent. It probably actually makes thiestic beliefs sound better than athiestic beliefs tbh. If you have an 85 IQ Athiest and an 85 IQ Christian, then I'd say you're more likely to get a decent moral framework out of the christian than the athiest, because maybe neither of them really understands why something is good or bad. But the Christian doesn't really need to know, they just need to know "well that's what god said", while the athiest will just be totally lost.

I don't think it's off topic. I joked when I said we're discussing 2025 spoilers, but it's accurate.

Like it or not, elements of the right have been attacking gamers and other "geek" entertainment for a while, and are ramping up as AAA gaming collapses and the election of Trump makes them think they have a mandate.

Dev, who remembers the 90s, thinks he's setting up le-epik-pwn on these guys, but he's likely too incompetent to do it. Because while me (and I assume others) come at it from a free speech angle, and a "these people are stupid" angle, Dev is doing it from a fake centrist position.
