What is the saddest movie you've ever seen?

Personally the saddest I've seen is Grave of the Fireflies, created by Studio Ghibli. Without giving too much away it's an animated movie about WWII and the cost of war. I've been emotionally impacted by many movies, but this one has stuck with me the most. Highly recommend to watch but be warned it's not for the faint of heart.

Damn it you stole my answer completely, the green mile and watership down are pretty devastating, and I watched them when I was really young so they left an impact. Another honorable mention is The Fox and The Hound.

Johnny Got His Gun. The fact that a man who is limbless, has no eyes, cannot hear and cannot speak and forced to live like this for the rest of his life is not only sad. It's pure nightmare fuel.

If an animal is prominently featured in the movie, it dies for dramatic effect.

That's why I can't watch any movie with an animal featured that isn't talking. Because their complexity is basically "be adorable and then die for maximum heartstring-pulls".

The Seven Samurai, not technically sad, but the ending did kind of get me (we saved the village, but it's not really a victory for us)
The Searchers (same reason as The Seven Samurai)

I might have included Titanic, but I think there should be a distinction between "sad" and "misery porn".

I want to say Grave of the Fireflies, since that’s the one that made me openly cry, but I think Requiem For a Dream beats it out. That movie didn’t make me cry, but I still remember the first time I watched it, sitting there in complete silence after it ended feeling like I had the life sucked out of me. Easily the bleakest, no hope movie I’ve ever seen.

I saw a Triple feature feating Old Yeller, followed by Requiem for a Dream and fished with Remains of the Day.

They handed out hand guns at the end so we could just finish ourselves off.

Requiem for a Dream is one of my favourite movies, it is fucking harrowing. It's the Mother's story that ruins me. Also "Kids" is another of that ilk.

Come and see. The best and the worst war movie ever made. Best because it is basically a retelling of true events, worst because those events are the reason God doesn't want to talk to us anymore.

Sicario to some extent, because it shows that even the people who could fix the problem have given up long time ago. There is no point in fighting.

Documentaries are cheating a bit, still its the saddest and most enraging thing put to film.

War related media like your op choice is so emotionally brutal. When the Wind Blows and Barefoot Gen come to mind too.

Ghibli is a perfect mix of strong stories, beautiful art and perfectly complimenting music. I've got albums full of the music box soundtrack covers and those alone have a hint of innocence and melancholy.

Someone else mentioned Watership. I loved the music in that film. The ending track to the Plague Dogs film too always gets my eyes wet, even though I wasn't too into the general film itself.
Music makes such a difference!
