They want to be seen as supportive but don’t actually want to be seen as being part of that particular group that’s getting sympathy. If you do, watch the sparks fly.
"Lizzo is beautiful" vs. "You look like Lizzo"A fun and repeatable social experiment to act out on such handmaidens is to insert yourself into one of their gratuitous "look at me I'm fat but you have to say I'm beautiful" posts and present them with a doctored photo to make them look even more obese. They will take the bait without fail
"TransWomen are women/beautiful" vs. "Congrats on your transition!"
"All women are 10s (but also my besties are 11s and I'm a 12)" vs. "That girl's a 10" ("You're just falling for patriarchal beauty standards!")
One explanation is that women participate in covert/indirect competition over status:
- Actual 10s say "every woman is a 10" so everyone else won't gang up on them
- Above average women say it to less attractive women so they won't try to improve themselves/become more attractive
- Less attractive women say it to more attractive women to make themselves 10-adjacent
- Unattractive women say it as delusion/resentment
