I lived in Illinois for a long time growing up. Illinois is extremely humid and hot, you can grow as much corn and wheat there as you want- it's not tropical. You aren't growing oranges there. Winter is a cold, wet affair where the snow piles up high. It limits what you can grow despite the soil being good enough to support virtually anything
