Now they even do them on kids for chickenpox and other fairly harmless diseases.
Anyone one here remember "chicken pox parties" - where your parents would have you sleep over at the house of a kid who currently had chicken pox, so you'd get infected and get it out of the way?

Chicken pox is one of those things where it's genuinely best to get it right when you're little, because when you're little, it's (usually) mild or at the very least, without permanent, long term effects, aside from potential scarring; if you get full blown chicken pox as an adult (having never been exposed to it before) it can actually be fatal.

Vaccines played a huge role in eliminating once common diseases, but it's mRNA that is in part causing people to largely distrust vaccines now, that and FUD about vaccines being linked to autism (which in the last 30 years wasn't helped by Andrew Wakefield trying to cook the data so he could get paid)
The biggest thing causing people to distrust vaccines now is the establishment was caught lying over and over when it came to anything and everything COVID-related, from its origins to masking to the effectiveness of the vaccine. Now lots of people are asking how much other stuff they lie about.

But if you never had chicken pox and are instead vaccinated, you don't get shingles. And shingles can get pretty bad as well

IRS is next on this system it seems.
IRS has already been using login.gov and id.me for quite some time. It was an absolute PITA to get an account and I know tax professionals who waited until the last possible minute to get those accounts for that very reason.

Ever since the mid 2000's the entire thing has gone insane
Not to mention this may be about the time vaccine production and release to the public became more politically charged as opposed to release after trial vaccines underwent rigorous testing.

No desire whatsoever to look at root causes, just treat symptoms and get me on a pill forever.
Years ago, a graduate student I knew from abroad was surprised and appalled that American healthcare boils down to giving people a pill in response to their health-related complaints. It's not too shocking, though, given how deep big Pharma's pockets run in the US.

*raises hand* And it didn't even have to be a planned party for Chickenpox to spread. Roughly half my grade school peers likely got chickenpox from attending a classmate's birthday party even though it wasn't done deliberately to have us get it at the same time.

Weird thing is actual military assault weapons are actually banned. Selective fire weapons can't be bought and bump stocks were banned by Trump.
Maybe we’ll get an AWB that bans black mean looking rifles at the same time that the supremes overturn the ban on select fire weapons.

Fully automatic as long as they look like hunting rifles!

My argument would be, shingles are bad, yes, but so is teaching children they should neurotically avoid illness, and they will need to rely on big pharma for be healthy their entire lives without interruption.

Acquainting children with the idea that they're going to get sick, it's inevitable, and gather some emotional regulation about it is a good thing.

I'm not saying avoid all vaccines. Just that COVID has crystallized this weird idea that we can avoid illness and people can't cope with the idea that we can't.

I hope this doesn’t come off as pedantic, but this is not due to willpower. You did it with planning and discipline.

Willpower is required when you are around temptation. It’s more draining because it requires energy and focus. What you did was create better conditions and stick with it, which has an element of momentum.

You demonstrated will in making the changes, but through discipline you removed the need for willpower. It became simple maintenance.

I say this because this framing helped me understand how to make similar changes for myself. As men, it’s easy to try to do too much, fail, and think ourselves weak for failing. The negative cycle can only be broken with discipline. Bits of will spent here and there that compound.

I hope you’re able to solve your other issue through your own design rather than some bullshit pharma.

It's amazing to see people that are otherwise intelligent somehow be convinced that having every single COVID vaccine will keep them from getting it only to be Pikachu face surprised when they end up getting COVID anyways - especially when the people in question are current or retired health care professionals who should know how vaccines work.

But this is just one small example of how Big Pharma and politicians have worked together to push people into solving their problems with medication when it's not always the best option - especially with newer medications being rushed into production with no clue what if any long-term bad side-effects might exist. If RFK can somehow stand up to Big Pharma and help people be healthy without a plethora of prescriptions, I'd argue it's a net positive for the country even if some of his opinions or beliefs might seem a bit wacky.

This. Too many people lack planning and discipline because those traits are neither taught nor encouraged. Instead, people are encouraged to act on impulse and do what's popular even if it's ultimately self-destructive. It's not easy to have the discipline to do what's right and do it regularly, but it can be done if one is willing to learn and practice good habits.

For the first time in the entirety of his near decade-long political career, Donald Trump is enjoying a net positive favorability rating per The Hill (archive) - and has been in the black for a couple weeks apparently:

(The graph only goes back to 2023 but I believe this is true)
It's probably a honeymoon period but it's still wild to see.
Thanks doc

A funny article from The Hill: "Democrats recalibrate their resistance to Trump" (archive)

They blame everyone and everything for their political failure but themselves. It's the "dark money." It's the consultants. It's because they didn't push abortion enough.

Or maybe... their platform is not palatable to regular people?
This isn’t true. Smallpox only has one virus for it which comes in two strains. It never successfully evolved into new strains like you see with influenza and the cold that can be used to avoid vaccination. I don’t think the smallpox virus was ever observed to successfully mutate at all.

I actually would argue that smallpox was already on its way to eradication and the vaccine just helped push it along.
Smallpox never evolved into a bunch of different strains because it is a DNA virus. These kinds of viruses are stable. Influenza and rhinovirus (common cold) are RNA viruses. RNA viruses do not have self-correcting enzymes and, thus, mutate more.
