So random PSA because I keep seeing people ask in regards to a certain individual who should be kicked off this service forever- What does it mean when someone like me points out that a specific transphobe is extremely dangerous?
In my experience, the worst thing most people on a site like this can
imagine a dedicated hatemonger is bombarding a target with hateful messages. Insults, self harm, etc. I had a REALLY tame example here, and it was flagged instantly, so just assume some naughty words in a post I guess.
A few people with more imagination or experience might also be aware that there
are also creeps who might attach images or videos to posts like that with intense graphic content.
As far as bad actors go, that's nothing. Back on the other website, when things were particularly nasty in 2014, I would frequently wake up to see 99+ unread messages, sit down, report and block, and
maybe 4 hours later get through all the drive-by shouting and have a usable feed again. Sometimes longer. But any individual there, whatever, you shouted hate through a burner and took 5 seconds out of my day.
The sort of people who coordinate attacks like that, highlighting an account name to sic
the hordes on are the actual attack vector worth worrying about there. There really aren't people out there who go around seeking out trans people or whatever to shout slurs at and post obscene imagery to, just one by one, on their own. There's people who quietly point at a target, and those who...
attack who they're pointed at.
I would not necessarily call everyone who does the pointing dangerous, though. It depends who they've cultivated as attackers. Most well-established people who make a habit of this have an audience of edgy teenagers or sad lonely channers who, like most people, can't
really think of much to do to try and hurt a stranger over the internet than the people I'm addressing here. They're going to direct a flood of hateful comments at someone, and hey, that can really mess your day up, make you waste several hours blocking and reporting, but that's not the danger line.
The people who are actually really dangerous behave in exactly the same way as the people who just toss out a name or screenshot a post with no context, knowing that their audience will "get them," but the audience they have includes people who are a hell of a lot more creative about how to attack.
You've got revenge porn (that's when someone acquires/fakes sexual imagery of someone and distributes it widely). You've got SWATing (that's when someone calls the police, claims a violent crime is happening at the target's address, and maybe adds some sound effects, named for SWAT teams). You've
got the rare dedicated few who will physically go to the target's house and threaten the target, or physically attack them, or deface their property, do things to pets, set their home on fire, or break in and attack them.
I am personally familiar with all of the above being done to people I care
about. Because a dangerous bigot pointed them out to a sufficiently motivated audience.
What you must understand, if you're an onlooker when people are discussing this, and ESPECIALLY if you are maintaining a platform like this one where someone is habitually directing eyes at various trans people
is that you don't see the attack happen on the site. You just see the shot-caller pointing the finger. To know what happens after that finger gets pointed, you need to watch what happens to the person the finger is pointed at, or have some basic level of faith that experts in stochastic terrorism,
(who you can often recognize as people writing this sort of 101 explainer constantly, or working for well-known national or international anti-hate organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center or GLAAD) KNOW WHAT THE HELL WE ARE TALKING ABOUT when we call these people dangerous.
Personally at
least, I don't toss labels like that around lightly. And while there WAS a time where I'd have a bunch of dossiers good to go with all the relevant news articles and documentation to show you how multiple people's lives were put in jeopardy from a given scumbag's behavior, I've had to move a lot.
And if that's still too hard to follow... OK you know Death Note? Picture Death Note except instead of writing people's names down in a magic notebook creeps right'em down on high traffic social media pages, and instead of magic heart stoppages there's just roving gangs of bigots who bookmark those.
