Late & gay re: the issue of people using casual singular "they"... yes it's common among gendershits, but there are also a lot of people who do it without any socjus overtones. Usually it's just due to socializing online. Seeing "skittlesfan1386" and a generic avatar doesn't give immediate gender cues: most online people are never anything more than text on a screen. So people who socialize online will often refer to others with singular "they" just out of laziness instead of constantly digging for pronouns. That can end up carrying over to real life or people they know the sex of just due to habit. If you get triggered over people who use "they" you're probably catching a lot of false positives who are just Internet nerds at worst.

I used to be down with third-person-singular "they," until I suffered through reading a story that used it for an enby character. Turns out it's a miserable experience, and now I've brought "he or she" back into my lexicon out of spite.

Iain Banks was somewhat of a forerunner to woke, and active when it was just becoming a thing, and his works handle non-binary characters perfectly well. Same thing with gender transitions, for that matter. Drones and Minds (sentient machines) are ”it” unless they prefer him or her, in which case they will have an avatar of that gender to make it obvious. The same goes for human characters who change gender, when they’re male they’re him, when they’re female they’re her. The explanation we get is that the Culture’s (deliberately constructed that way) language only has one pronoun, it, and the text we read is simply a translation that uses English terminology in the way that’s most appropriate.

It doesn’t impair readability one bit. Only one story even makes gender transitions an important part of the background anyway, and that happens to be the best one (for entirely unrelated reasons). I think it comes down to the quality of the author. Modern authors trying to mix gender stuff into their novels do an awful job of it because they want to show themselves as progressive. Banks wanted to show a society so progressive and advanced that gender doesn’t matter, and it’s one of the best sci-fi series of all time. It helps that Banks was genuinely a pretty cool guy, he didn’t feel the need to prove anything, so he just wrote great books instead.

I just assumed all of the "men" these pooners use as examples are SEA people. I have never met a caucasian man shorter than me. I'm 175cm. I'm also not in the states so the only other ethnicities I see are arabs, turks/West Asians and the occasional negroid.

Caucasian dudes around 170 cm (5'7'') are actually rather common. I live in Sweden, FYI. I see ethnically Swedish dudes at or around this height every day (I live in a Gothenburg förort), so it's definitely not gawk-worthy. I'm 5'4'' myself, and I would say that on average I see a couple of ethnically Scand dudes a week who are my height. Guys shorter than me do exist, but they tend to be of a darker complexion.

Possibly, the “boyfriend” knew from the start and just thought that this tranny wanted to be friends and they were going to play dnd, warhammer, watch cape shit movies, and were doing things that nerdy guys do together.
The “boyfriend” might not have had many friends, or friends interested in these things and was happy to have a friend to share these things with.

That’s a very good point.

“Going out” used to mean someone that you physically would go and see.

Howdy, never posted on Reddit before so if I'm doing it wrong I'll have to beg your pardon. I'm just looking for any advice on how to reframe my thought process around being born in this body (specifically, one without a penis). I've been on T a year and a half, happy with some changes and eh about others, did a stint of detransitioning, tried a grab bag of different genders/identities, and now I'm just kinda... well, I don't know. I'm transmasc and that's about it. I wasn't happy detransed but it did ease my mind of The Torment (i.e. having no dick) and now that I'm back being a dude I just find myself falling into the same bad thought patterns that convinced me to stop being one. I'm waiting for a top surgery and hysto date, both of which will help with my body image, but it always comes back to the ol' genitals, alas. Not interested in phallo for multiple reasons and meta just makes me think I'd feel worse than before - nothing against anyone who wants or has gotten these surgeries, I just don't think they're for me. I contemplate just getting a vaginectomy, perhaps with simple release... but honestly sometimes bottom growth gives me dysphoria because it's like, I don't know, a reminder of my inability to have what I want? I'm sorry for how negative this is, at one point I felt a lot of joy from my bottom growth and the changes of T but it's possible I just overthought it and ruined it for myself. (And yes I am in therapy, working on it.) But yeah, if anyone can offer me some wisdom or just relate to The Torment, I'd be much obliged.

but what current year shrink would dare diagnose 'penis envy'?
