  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
The main character is a tyrant serial rapist genocider who's entire arc is supposed to be about redemption, but he never actually gets that redemption. The story acts like he does, but he doesn't atone for his crimes, he "feels guilty" but he continues to treat people like shit, murdering people is still his first solution. No one reacts to him very realistically either. One of the CHILDREN that he RAPED grows up to be a supporting character who basically immediately forgives him and then it's not really an issue between them anymore. The kicker is that at the end of the novel after he has a trial for his crimes he is not punished, but instead given a high ranking judicial position that essentially makes him judge jury and executioner. This is the exact kind of power that he abused in the first place. Nothing was learned.
lol wut? I never thought it'd be that bad.

God damn it why are fantasy authors like this

edit: Yes I'm aware of the thread on it

Old news but I've been reading Shadiversity's fantasy book. What the fuck is wrong with him, did Mormonism eat away at his brain stem?
He's retarded and a drama queen.

A recent video is him shitting on a random extreme sword girl even though he's fully aware she isn't teaching actual sword combat but tricks for a competition.

The worst part is him representing himself as some kind of sword master because he larps HEMA whenever he can haul his fat ass out of bed.

Fact checked by casual historian.

I really didn't either. It comes across to me like he was stroking it throughout the writing process.

They understand that very dark dramatic shit will elicit a reaction from the audience but they don't understand the nuances of writing that stuff into your story.

That video of him swordfighting some other fat guy is hilarious and it kills me how proud of it he is. It's just no good shad.

Honestly if the book is even a third as bad as what you say it warrants not just reading it but a thread of it's own to laugh at it.

Nobody seems to have brought up Feral Historian on this thread, which seems a damned shame.
This is how I got introduced to him; it looks like Breadtube adjacent content, but is surprisingly and dangerously based in rejecting the narrative of Nazism as a unique almost metaphysical evil.
I love this guy but I don't think he counts as a real history channel regardless of his degree. He's a science fiction reviewer with a penchant for political overthinking.

IDK about the rest of the KF historytube/edutainment spergs, but he's solidly mid-to-good. He's started branching into more pop-culture stuff, so I see him as a much better Simon Whistler focused on faith and religious topics (same ease of access to the audience).

Personally, I like Let's Talk Religion -- he's more dry but tends to dive into really esoteric non-Western religions in more detail than Religion for Breakfast (who seem to know each other). Moving away from just religion, Esoterica goes into even more dry detail about history, philosophy, and religion from a more "arcane" perspective. He is a rabbi but he makes it a point to leave his personal beliefs outside his research (what academia used to be like).
Let's Talk Religion is one of those channels I put on while I'm doing something very repetitive and menial at work that doesn't require me to interact with anyone for extended periods of time. When content is dry and informative like his videos, it's easier to retain the content of each video when I'm on the clock as opposed to when I'm at home and my brain is being drawn and quartered by my own attention span.

I can't say the same for Esoterica. I find myself getting viscerally annoyed every time Dr. Sledge stops reading a text to make a quip for the sake of levity (I'm sure at least one other person in this thread knows what I'm referring to). I hit a breaking point and had to shut off his video about the gnostic Gospel of Mary about 20 odd minutes in because he kept taking breaks from his reading of the text to try to be funny.
I generally like Religion for Breakfast and think Dr. Henry's content is pretty solid. I don't remember the specific video but early on he made a mission statement about wanting to appear as spiritually and politically neutral as possible with the subject matter that he covers, which I find respectable. My personal favorites from the channel are the history of the Christmas Tree (which is a great vid to post every December whenever a some Redditor brainlet makes a post claiming Christmas trees were pagan in origin), and a video about the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem with footage of the shrine's interior, something that is normally only accessible to Muslims.

However, for all the interesting stuff RfB covers, I don't like the weird pop-theology direction the channel is heading lately with videos about manifesting and the modern history of the word 'avatar'. I think there's enough interesting subject matter about religion that can be made palatable to normies without having to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Also, and this is just a personal thing, but I kind of hate that he uses BCE/CE, even when covering Christian subject matter. It's literally the one instance where you shouldn't use it imo.
With regards to what I posted half a year ago regarding Religion for Breakfast, my opinion about the channel has stayed the same, but I think that anyone with a serious interest in studying religion will eventually outgrow it. It's a great resource for people who may know nothing of a subject and want to learn the core concepts of it, but you can only cover so much in a 20-minute video followed by a 4-minute Nebula plug.

Question.
Has anyone watched content from this channel, History of Everything? Tried to search for him on the Farms since it's my usual vetting format for new channels I come across but couldn't find any.

Also this video is just because it came into my recommended.

I have History Buffs as my go-to history lessons otherwise.

Edit: My god this guy is very salty. I kinda laughed that he seemed to imply that Ridley Scott released Kingdom of Heaven as "post 9/11 propaganda".

Isn't this the same guy who claims spears are better than swords using super flawed logic?

Most of the best manuals on single combat was for honor duels not for actual battlefield techniques there's a reason the Swiss pipeman was so effective individually though probably quite good fighters but as a unit they are unmatched in the 14th and 15th century and even into the 16th century of keeping formation.

Hand to hand combat is something you never wanna actually find yourself in on a battlefield in the 15th century even if you are a 9th degree black belt you are most likely going to have your face beaten in by a guy who still has his poll axe even if he is not as well trained.

no he actually does do history stuff he just likes mixing science fiction with views with actual real world history is generally an interesting guy.
You're not narrowing it down
pullaxes are better than Spears and swords most spear thrusts would not go through heavy plate.
Basically the German mercenary bands figured out how to push through Pike walls by having the Pikes in the front and then guys with huge great swords that make most earlier grade swords look like toothpicks with a second grip so you could basically knock Pikes apart and get in and just start hacking the enemy pipe into death
.
So basically one rank of Pikmin another rank of guys with great swords then pikeman then great swords'cause once you get inside the killing edge of a Pike it's basically completely and utterly useless

Depends entirely on the context; what armor it's going up against, the weapons being used against it, the discipline and skill of the person using it, what terrain it's being used on, the budget of the people raising armies, etc.

Online arguments about which weapon is objectively better are just more autistic version of the classic roman legionnaire vs european knight arguments. It removes all the relevant context and makes purely qualitative assumptions about something that in its time were both qualitative and quantitative. It's similarly why armor and castles didn't disappear with the widespread adoption of gunpowder, swords remained viable in combat until the introduction of mechanized firearms, and polearms became firearms.

Feral Historian is not only a cool guy with a neat channel, but apparently he was in the same circle of friends as th Nuclear Boyscout

Esoterica is a Reconstructionist Jew ie atheist who likes to larp as religious for some reason. I could absolutely tell listening to his videos.
