Funny you mention that game, there's currently a sperg fight involving the Cruelty Squad dev happening on Xitter over it. A right-wing nobody "gamedev" personality decided to shit on the game, prompting John Crueltysquad to come out and gunt guard for it.
I hate to say it, but I kinda agree with the blatant Twitter grifter calling out the Cruelty Squad dev for Twitter grifting.

People really do need to cut out the "criticism is bad and all devs are just gentle little flowers that deserve nothing but praise or else they'll tragically wither" parasocial bullshit and I really fucking hate that the "modern boomshoot community" are the ones that perpetuated this way of thinking years ago.

It's looked like shit since the VX era and I don't know why so many games stick with it.
If you're making your first few games or just making a game for free, it's fine to use them. It's when you try to sell a game for money and put them on places like steam where RTP becomes an issue.

A game that actually looks like it's from the era. Not a low-poly piece of shit, not some "cozy" trash that used a toon shader, something that ACTUALLY looks like it could be on PS1/2/Dreamcast.
Troons don't do because it actually takes a lot of effort: replicating all the hacks made to push out peformance on weak hardware. Lighting, shadows, texturework, LODs even.

As an aside, I recently downloaded a demo of some troonslop Cruelty Squad ripoff "goblinAmerica" because the dev was talking about the "Shinzo Abe gun" in it.
It is the exact opposite of what I would want. Ugly as fuck, incoherent, and yet FOR SOME REASON it runs on Unreal Engine 5.1 and requires a GTX 1070 minimum.
This is on a PC with a GTX 1080 standing in a mostly empty room with resolution set to 1080p and medium settings.

What would y’all’s idea for a reverse troonslop game be like
As in, what type of game would be an antithesis of the slop made or would not attract troons? We discuss both in this thread.

The first idea that comes to mind would be something like a puzzle game focused on the mechanics more than the graphics. Another idea is that someone actually makes a game using old tech or builds an engine to recreate old tech like others said, an actual love letter to the times.

The second is impossible: troons are highly online creatures that live in fictional constructed worlds, escaping into video games. The only games that might escape this fate are games aimed at adult women like hidden object games and candy crush type games. If it doesn't appeal to young people or does not have a traditional fandom, it will likely have very little troon presence.

a lot of these troons have a background in art, so its safe to assume they know how to draw at least decently well, if u can draw, u can pixel art
if u can't draw for shit, draw intentionally shittily and use that to catch peoples eyes, call it a "lazycore asthetic" or smth like that, and make sure ur fellow troons circlejerk your game as much as possible, when ppl see these shitty twitter memes everywhere, 90% of them will be mildly annoyed, and 10% will try your game, out of these 10%, 90% won't stick around cuz ur a bad dev, the remaining 1% who did try it and like it are still tens of thousands of people, cuz u had ur fellow troons manufacture a fuckton of shitty memes and have em go viral

There's a range of troon backgrounds, honestly. Some artists are self taught and don't actually know the basics, they just learn what they like. Some went to art school or had some training and fell into the intentionally ugly art crowd, mimicking their peers to be cool and hip. Some went to art school and got the grades to pass, but turned out like Andrew Dobson and decided to learn nothing or disregard everything. Some are terminally lazy and cannot be assed, whether it is mental illness or general apathy towards anything and everything. Allergic to work.

threat interactive has the right idea but really bad execution. he stinks of grift, has little to show on his own and is an unreal nigger. that he makes industry fags and the likes seethe is funny, but the guy himself is undoubtedly missing a few of his own screws and serves as poor imagery for the wave of anti-unoptimized games that's growing. there are people out there who've made good games and are critical of this shit but they're not making videos or going in-depth about issues, it sucks this is the best we currently got

you could call it intentional in a way. Everything in the games industry has been designed for >le workflow! with zero care for any optimization practices (see nanite, lumen, etc.), its good for companies who need mr pajeet to shit out a game that can produce 8th-gen quality screenshots, even if it means running at 50 FPS on a 4070 & frames that have been smeared to shit and back when you're actually playing it.

I wish his videos were better produced and his scripts were more coherent, but atleast he seems (heavy emphasis) to know what he's talking about. and I definitely think he should be prioritizing getting some sort of passable V-slice of his game out to the public, if anything to lend credibility to his image.

I am glad this OP has expanded to more games than just Ultrakill, I wanna become a game dev myself one day and shedding some light on this manner is important for the quality of modern gaming in general. I've also got an update from my last post here:
I've got a friend who LOVES this game. He is starting to become a degenerate by "being a trans ally" and even worshipping known degenerate and Gabriel's voice actor Gianni Matragano, even not minding when he "unironically" said "REJECT CHRIST" in a vid that I can't find right now.
Shortly after writing this, that friend seemingly cut all ties with me, only for him to come back for me and now not only are we friends again, he seems to have recovered from trannyslop syndrome. I haven't heard him mention Ultrakill at all!

If you are going to avoid everything trannies cling to then you might as well not bother developing videogames. Celeste has none of what you listed and it is THE tranny videogame even if it has nothing to do with being a tranny.

Just make the games you want and if some tranny or coomer wants a nude mod or a trans flag somewhere tell them to fuck off. You don't regain territory by constantly giving up things because trannies like them.

You should be able to make sexy characters if you want without being blamed for whatever coomers do. People sexualize the demons from Doom, it happens whether you intend to or not. It's really not a big deal to have sexy in your games.
