as far as the movie talk, I know folks are talking submarine movies, but if you haven't seen battleship potemkin, you should remedy that. It's one of the better movies from one of the best eras in cinema.

In the sense of did they exist? Yes, they were a thing, but they were about as rear echelon as they can get. I don't even think they left the UK for the European mainland until after Germany gave up. Their great claim to fame was sorting old mail a little faster than expected. Did it need to get done? Sure, but we're talking a couple weeks sooner for a few months of work, not like they did the impossible or some shit. They put them through basic, they dealt with some mail, they existed in the UK at the tail end of the air war, that's it.

This is going to be fucking lame or incredibly ahistoric, there really isn't anything impressive here, unless you think finding an entire group of black women having jobs is some massive historical achievement. Which adds up for the netflix crowd, I guess.

There was an actual 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion in the Women's Army Corps. This unit was specifically made for black women to participate in WWII after black leaders at the time explicitly called on the government to mobilize them to help the war effort. The US military did not have a dedicated mail unit and thought the lack of mail hurt soldier morale, which was their job to fix. Some white general wanted to take control of them and had an issue with the black officer, Major Charity Adams, but basically left them alone when he saw they were doing their job and did not need oversight

There is also some story about the WAC military police not being issued firearms and instead using "jujitsu" to fight off unwanted attention while they were in France. Sounds kind of farfetched, but I don't really care. What is certain is that there was all-black female mail battalion which, at the end of the war, unfucked the military's mail problems.
