UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Much higher risk/rates of type 2 in people of South Asian ethnic background. They actually do need to put down the fork for their health. They also don't.
Can't go to the pub so they go to some dessert parlour and shovel ice-cream down their gullets instead.

Admittedly if I came from a background where peak dessert technology was ras malai I'd be smashing the Haagen Dazs too.

There was a thread a while back that was basically a yanks guide to Britain, could anyone link me to it? I can't find it for the life of me

I'm doing the meat for my Nans christmas dinner party thing. When the fuck did Pigs in blankets get so pricy? £4 for a pack of 10? Are they high? I'm trying to convince the family that full sized ones would be better, but they're adamant that everyone wants the min ones. There's going to be like 26 of us coming. Absurd. Madness! Can't wait.

Tesco's finest are 10 for £3.50, where are you shopping, Waitrose?

Aldi are doing 12 for £2, a tenner there will see you right

You could go whole hog (...sorry not sorry) with Abel & Cole's organic option - £11 for 7-8 of them:

Then you can say you blew the budget, and pudding is one profiterole each.

Meanwhile, shrinkflation can die in a fire. I swear I saw a box of Ritz crackers half the size they used to be, but no cheaper. Jacking up the price, fine, inflation happens, but the manipulation ("it's just the same as before!") is where the wheels come off the delivery van.

I really felt rage about this when cat food sachets quietly slipped from 100g to 85g. Cats are already constantly starving, or so they all try to convince me.

Justifying the plan, Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, said that 13% of those under MI5 investigation for terrorism were under 18, a threefold increase in the last three years.
She also said arrests of under-18s for terror offences have increased from just three in 2010, to 32 in the year ending September 2024.
More like they are under 18 to get easier entry to the UK, I suspect.

It's possible, I think the larger cause is they've widened the umbrella for what's considered terrorism so now a lot more people are facing charges. Of course Prevent is also desperate to find/create the right-wing terrorists despite being repeatedly found to have focused on them at the expense of other more serious threats and even sent financial support to groups who are pro-(Islamic)terrorism.

So there's likely a lot of kids who've read edgy shit on the internet and now fall under the terrorism banner. That said looking at the linked articles even with that the numbers potentially support your interpretation more. Despite which of course the Guardian focuses only on "muh far-right."
In the year to September 2020, 4% of those arrested were aged under 18. But in the year to September 2022, 17% of terrorism-related arrests were people under 18. That equates to 32 arrests: 12 were suspected of extreme rightwing terrorism, 16 were suspected of Islamist extremism, and for four children the ideology could not be classified.
Police have warned that children from middle-class backgrounds are being lured into extreme rightwing terrorism with online content based on violent video games shaped to indoctrinate them. Statistics for Prevent, the official deradicalisation scheme, also show a growing number of young people being referred.

The are constantly battling the almost non-existent far-right because if they didn’t have the occasional edgy teenage to throw to the press they would have to admit that they have and continue to import people into this country who hate us and want to kill us.

It’s why the Conservative answer to the Rainbow Police State we’ve sleep walked into this ant to abolish the laws, but for the police to not enforce them when it’s politically inconvenient.

I can’t believe what an utter mess the Tories are. They’ve got the most hated government of all time in power and they’re barely landing a blow on them.

We’re fucked, bros.

This annoys me to all hell. It is a fucking sausage wrapped in bacon. How hard is it to make? It is cheaper to buy the bacon and the sausage on its own.

Then there's the scarcity of cheese wrapped in bacon. Go to M&S and it is always missing from the shelves, the middle class vultures hoarding it all.

Sorry my Dad brings this up every Christmas.

Have you considered this is by design? A uniparty, if you will. (Except across class lines, rather than le gay left-right shit the US side has.)
That’s a bit too tinfoil hat for me. It means a conspiracy so large that someone other than internet weirdos like us would have blabbed about it.

My tin foil hat theory is they know the economy is so fucked they don’t want to be anywhere near power so they’re putting up the brown ones to lead as sacrificial lambs.

Plus making you own with quality sausage and bacon will taste even better.

Just get some cheap frozen sausages, cut them in half (bacon too), then wrap them round accordingly, cheaper and you get more product (meat) for what you pay for.

I will vouch for Lidl. The bakery is great, and the prices and quality are better than Aldi's (IMO). I may or may not have insider information for M&S which for some reason is considered posh even though they have the same suppliers as Tesco or Sainsbury, to add to that-all bakery items are made in a factory in France, and not in-fact "M&S Kitchen".

Merry Christmas (fuck anyone who says happy holidays).

PLenty of yuge top secret plans have involved thousands and few knew the full extent of what they were doing. Compartmentalisation is necessary to hide projects as big as Churchill's industrial tank building on the sly.

The economy is a hot potato for sure. It would be nice if Britain was planning the fiscal equivalent of Operation: Get behind the darkies, but I think that's copium and optimism.

So there's likely a lot of kids who've read edgy shit on the internet and now fall under the terrorism banner
Israel/Palestine is a big part of it because it became a cause celebre, and lockdowns driving kids even more online (which seems to have stuck) also contributed.

Kids repeat what they've seen on TikTok in class to be little edgelords, without understanding the concepts of Fedposting or that teachers have a duty to refer to Prevent when there's "no other way" to tackle "potential radicalisation". If a kid starts spouting off that Jews control the media or women should be in the kitchen or that gender dysphoria is a psyop social contagion or that the West is a sexually degenerate society that's corrupting people away from the path of Islam, then they could quite easily find themselves in front of a Channel panel in a way that probably wouldn't happen to an adult who's not hanging around anyone with Prevent duty.

Just get a big pack of the small mini sausages and a pack of bacon. Wrap them up and bake them. Much easier and cheaper.
I really felt rage about this when cat food sachets quietly slipped from 100g to 85g. Cats are already constantly starving, or so they all try to convince me.
Me too. The cat started begging and it was only when I realised they felt smaller that I saw they’d gone down to 85g. I’ve seen some at 70g. Poor cat. I mainly give him the raw stuff now, it’s made a difference.

If a kid starts spouting off that Jews control the media
Most teachers are Corbyn mongs and would agree with that and not report it. The left makes Null’s antisemitism look amateur these days.
women should be in the kitchen or that gender dysphoria is a psyop social contagion
Now that is getting you and you family attending a bunch of Prevent classes.
that the West is a sexually degenerate society that's corrupting people away from the path of Islam
Wow there, frienderino, you report that and people may think you’re a heckin’ racist. Don’t you know we live in a multicultural society and we should respect the views of minorities?

That is how teachers reporting to prevent works.

The same teaching union that said it wasn’t their job to report kids spouting Islamist rhetoric in schools was the same that proposed reporting families to the police if they thought kids were playing GTA V.

It’s two tiered system all the way down.
