UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Look at that pedostache-combover combo and tell me that (hypothetical) motherfucker isn't either 100% an act or the second coming of Saville.
I think he's a bit like Lil Lunchbox. It has to be an act and played up for the camera, but on the other hand if someone lives in character doing an act 100% of the time and takes the complete social penalty for acting like someone who genuinely thinks and behaves the way their character does... is it still an act? He managed to get kicked out of being a Conservative councillor and said after the KCL debacle that getting publicity for his remarks it hampered his career. Young Voices seems to have dropped him after his TV appearance.
He might be "in on the joke" but since it requires him to argue in favour of brother-sister incest on national television the whole thing's a bit

Claire Button, 35, of South Ockendon, Essex, has been charged with murder. A 35-year-old woman has been charged with murder following the death of a five-year-old boy in Essex.

Lincoln Button died following an incident in Windstar Drive, South Ockendon, on Sunday 15 December, Essex Police said.

Police were called to the scene following reports of serious concerns for the welfare of a child and a woman, and officers worked alongside paramedics in an attempt to save Lincoln.

A woman was taken to hospital for treatment following the incident. Her condition has since improved, and she has been questioned by police, according to the force.

Claire Button, 35, of Windstar Drive, South Ockendon, has been charged with murder, Essex Police said.

She is due to appear at Southend Magistrates' Court on Monday.
Detective chief inspector Alan Blakesley described the case as an "immensely complex investigation".

"It has taken a huge amount of work and dedication from the investigative team to reach this stage in our investigation and I would continue to call upon the public to refrain from speculating about the circumstances around this case," he said.
Lincoln's family paid tribute to him, saying: "Link was a cherished, loved, sweet, beautiful young soul who was adored by all and will be sorely missed every day."

Lincoln was a Year 1 pupil at Bonnygate Primary School in South Ockendon, which is part of the Osborne Co-operative Academy Trust.

In a statement, the school described him as a "cheeky, smiley, happy boy who was loved fondly by our Bonnygate family".

"His love for school, laughter and cuddles will be remembered and missed dearly," the school said.

"The school's priority is to support those within the community who need help to come to terms with this tragic loss."

I am never reading the spectator again even to get an opposing viewpoint on something what the fuck. They should be embarrassed to host that shit even for outrage clicks. Also, mountain climbing?
The Speccy has gone weird but WTF has happened to The Times? It feels like I’m reading The Guardian in the 90s these days.

I’m soon going to be reduced to reading, and may Allah forgive me for saying this, The Telegrath.

It's youthanasia isn't it? She gave him MAID.

What's that? A technical issue grounding an entire fleet of aircraft the day before Christmas? Oh wow, that never happens...

Today’s incident comes months after American Airlines grounded all its flights due to an IT crash caused by a faulty software update from the cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike.

American Airlines, among other airlines, grounded its flights for much of 19 July.

Delta Airlines was among other operators that were impacted - with more than 42,000 flights were delayed and over 4,700 cancelled worldwide.

They do not want you to travel and will make it as inconvenient as possible. It's time to accept that this internet spastic is on to something more than Letby.

I wouldn't have to worry about getting her pregnant at least; she would enjoy the chance to kill another kid, even if it's in the abortion clinic.
That’s the reason you’re one of my favourite posters. I wish this comment was in the US politics thread. I could see a 100 trad LARPers having an aneurism over it.

The twins have just discovered their school drywipe markers wipe off their wall boards at school but do not wipe off mummy's wallpaper. Any suggestions for removing it or at least ameliorating it until I can redecorate after the holidays
did you try acetone?

The Times has been liberal for many years. Lord Rees-Mogg (Jacob's father) was editor throughout the 70s. All he seemed to care about was capitalism, and most only remember him to his liberal attitude towards drugs.

The difference now is just that the next generation of journalists has come through and they largely aren't capable or interested in keeping the veneer of vague 'conservatism' in place.

Nearly all the words I have would get me banned from even this place. I hope he gets the full east-end experience, and may the spirit of Craysmas descend upon him with all its force.

How does the English Civil War not happening somehow prevent black worship?
Unironic cromwell worship is the new tradlarp, I guess.

Merry Christmas to you all! Including that one guy who racked up thousands of posts in a year, and inexplicably pops up with stupid opinions in every other thread I read!

May your roasties be crispy, your gravy non lumpy, and your Yorkshire puds rise gloriously (Fuck you they go on a roast.)

I really do get migraines that a small amount of ibuprofen and codeine stops. Doctor prescribed some sort of medication (not painkillers, don't remember what it was) for it ages ago but we found an easy way to prevent them so we decided to just go with that instead of pursuing medication. I just have a half box of OTC painkillers around just in case, but I only end up ever using them for rare severe pain.
It's pretty concerning when I hear about people who have just been taking painkillers for ages especially if they don't need them any more, and they have no idea how dangerous they can be. Then they end up needing help with withdrawals when someone finally notices and puts a stop to it.
Do some doctors really just not bother to figure out why controlled substances are being prescribed and if they're still needed?
If it was sumatriptan, which does something to your blood vessels in your brain then you can get imigran over the counter. Totally a wonder drug.
