I just find it interesting that I know so little about it, and that it's hard to find verified information on it. I wouldn't be surprised if they intentionally convince foreigners that they are worse off then they really are just to keep the riff raff away.

The most amusing part of this for me is that if you do follow the rules and don't fuck around, its probably one of the safest places to go. I've never heard of tourists being mugged or worse, how they might be in Europe. Treat it like an extended museum visit, and have the more normal tourist experience in the South and you should be set.

I've heard that Pyongyang nowdays is more like a second tier Chinese city, having the necessry basic ammenities for the needs of most of the population and even their own internet, though one that is no doubt heavily monitored by the government. I don't know if the other major cities in North Korea are like that or of it's just the capital that has somewhat modernised.
As a complete foreigner it wouldn't be a great place for someone like me to be in, but if I have family and connections there I'd probably be fine. There are elements that make it better then my home city, where most of the workforce is priced out of home ownership because real estate has become an investment asset for our politicians and rich foreigners and there is a prevalent level of crack heads and disorderly conduct. It's like how Japan where it's a very lovely place to live - but only if you're a local who abide by the laws and customs as they are hostile to foreigners who often don't
