Trump probably would have given him this quietly if he had kept his mouth shut and Trump himself is probably sympathetic to the position. But Elon literally cannot control himself and has pissed the normies off so much that H1B expansion is now an untenable position for Trump to take if he doesn't want to end up being an opposition president in 2026.

You can tell Elon doesn't really know how to use money to influence politics. Normal billionaires fund campaigns and quietly give their chosen guy a list of like five things and consider it money well-spent if they get 2-3 of the things on that list. Elon's list is like 20 difficult things and he spends all day in a ketamine stupor posting about them so normies can organize against them and also know the degree to which Trump is bought based on which things Elon gets.

Also, a lot of zoomers who went to uni went all in on STEM/tech and their prime-voting-age parents are pissed that they now have kids without career prospects in the face of the tech downturn. You can tell Elon wasn't prepared for normie middle-aged parents to shit on him because all his defenses are tuned as if he's arguing against /pol/ chuds.

I don't actually expect much of anything out of DOGE to start with, and after this whole debacle I imagine Trump will keep Vivek on a tight leash. He can't really leash Elon too hard, he did donate and put up a lot of money for this after all, but Vivek did nothing of the sort and has no institutional power except "being Trump's brownoid meat puppet at the primaries." If DOGE has teeth (doubt) there might be material, but I suspect the whole thing is just a grandstanding vehicle. Elon will content himself with securing further contracts for SpaceX and Vivek will suck up as much limelight as possible. DOGE is a non-starter because if you start breaking the legs of the Government table, it is liable to fold in on itself.
