Tom has the fatal combination of stupidity and arrogance. In his head, it makes perfect sense that this experienced (but uncertified) mining engineer would have no idea what his specimens are worth, and would need the marketing assistance of a man who got kicked out of the gem show. The lifetime of experience Tom has of smoking ditchweed and molesting dogs and children will surely lead him to a big come up this time! A normal person would see a hardworking expert in their field with no qualifications trying to unload product at below market price and think, "Hmm, sometime doesn't quite add up here. I better thoroughly check this" Tom jumps on the opportunity like it's a german shepherd in heat, immediately agreeing to some vague and possibly non-existent contract, and going on social media to beg other people to do the work for him.
