General Wrestling Discussion

I don't envy any of you who willfully consume anything iwc related. This thread, wrestling bios, and wwe.com are my sole sources of wrestling related content. I just don't have the time or patience for that vortex of pure, uncut retardation.
theres a few podcasts I enjoy but yeah 90% of the shit you see on YouTube is some Neckbeard Smark whining about how such and such guy cant be world champion but Cody/Roman/Mcintyre/etc. can, some of these channels are incapable of understanding the difference between a main eventer and a midcarder, sure you had guys like Austin who started off as a midcarder, but he earned his way to the main event scene, not all guys earn it and thats okay. also the disdain for Casual fans when they are the reason wrestling has been relevant in the first place (and really helped with the resurgence of WWE over the past 2 years) is an absolute disgrace, for every 20 Chads or Tyrones on twitter enjoying wrestling theres 1 basement dwelling Meltzer glazer who is seething at them, if I didn't know any better id be off-put by it

The Reign of Terror was what got me uninterested with wrestling for a long ass time. RAW and Smackdown were always either something I watched or had on in the background and hopped over to watch when shit I cared about came up and I just started finding other uses for my time. Even before the Reign of Terror, HHH was a fixture on programming as part of DX, the Corporation, the McMahon Helmsey Era, Two-Man Power Trip, etc.

He was in a prominent position, with boring, formulaic segments (while I think he is good in the ring I've been of the opinion that he largely sucks on the mic and would get routinely eviscerated by guys who could talk) for roughly 8 years (with his quad injury being the only real significant break.) I think a lot of the complaints about Roman and the Samoans being done to death are similar to complaints about the Reign of Terror.

You're absolutely right. The more I think about it, it definitely wasn't Bret

Oh this is going to drive me nuts. Who the freak was I thinking of.
You might be thinking of Undertaker resenting that with DDP.

You might also be thinking of Randy Savage (another guy who liked to meticulously plan out his matches but for whatever reason doesn't seem to have the same reputation for it that DDP has) and Flair. Flair was infamously critical of Savage as a worker because he preferred to improv/riff in the ring based on crowd reactions and felt that Savage wasn't a good worker because of that.

Yknow what else is great about Trips? His "My Time" theme. The instrumental version at least. That shitty fucking RATM knockoff DX band can get in the fucking sea for all I care, they suck. But Jim's instrumental version of the theme was fucking money and fit perfectly. Especially with all the techno 2000 rgb lights that got added to the entrance.
Fuck it, Triple H has a GOAT entrance in general.

Could be a lot of guys who worked with Dallas tbh. Pretty sure Nash and Hall have bitched about his planning too. Course Nash bitches about anything if it isn't sidewalk slam, big boot, jackknife.

Ironic since Flair was routinely criticized for having the formulaic matches all the time too.

Well how could you forget an iconic entrance theme like "The Game" by Motorhead?

Unpopular opinion: I think Flair was overrated. All his promos and matches were basically the same. Once he was no longer the big dog in the company, he was essentially nothing (after NWO started).

eh, to a certain extent maybe, I'd say he was still a major part of the Monday Night Wars for WCW, sure the main event scene was mostly revolving around the nWo in the late 90s, but Flair had been the top star in WCW for like 15 years, being on top for that long makes it virtually impossible to be irrelevant even if your not in the world title scene anymore, a more mild example recently would probably be Cena, Cena has been mostly used to put over people for like the past 3-4 years now whenever hes there and it hasnt affected his standing in the wrestling zeitgeist that much

I remember the terror reign that was Jim Herd. From his Ding Dongs to expecting Flair to lose the belt, cut his hair, become Spartacus, and then take a significant pay cut, that guy was an idiot.

Kind of like you can't look at just Hogan now and really get how big he was at his height, the same is true with Flair. Flair was huge in parts of the US at his height.

The biggest problem with Flair is that he just never went away. His matches were formulaic, but that was true for everyone in the territories. You could get away with that. You didn't see Flair on regular TV wrestling hardly ever. He just did the promos, which compared to most people at the time, he was epic. You had to either see him live or on a PPV, which made it special and not so obvious he was doing the same match.

Flair today is depressing. And comparing Flair to the talent today isn't fair I think. It was just a different time.

God damn it, I'm old.

Interesting tidbit:

FYI, AEW reached out to Sportsnet about a TV deal here in Canada, with WWE leaving SN360 & heading to Netflix, not the other way around. SN360 opted to sign a deal with TNA instead which meant AEW will remain with TSN & Bell media. Nothing to do with a better deal from TSN.

heard about that on Wrestling Bios, that somehow sounds even more retarded then anything Vince was doing in the 2010s, he was literally the biggest star not in the WWF at that point, as a Gen Z fan it seems there was a lot of goofy shit going on back then (not that there isnt goofy shit going on from time to time nowadays but its honestly amazing to think about)
AEW honestly needs to get an intervention for Tony Khan, hes not listening to any advice from people who have actually worked in the industry and spergs out on twitter when WWE is kicking his ass, Netflix getting RAW (and all the other content internationally and likely in America later on too) should have been a big wake-up call to actually do common sense and intresting shit in AEW but no

TK is proving to be every bit of the petty asshole that Vince was.

The latest news on the Lucha Bros is that they felt that they were stagnant in AEW (they 100% were) so they negotiated a deal with WWE that was for less money than AEW was going to renew them for. They also stopped talking directly with AEW and had their agent handle the entire thing. TK took this personally and immediately pulled them from TV and activated all of Fenixs' extra contract time for when he was out injured so that they couldn't show up at the same time in WWE.

Same thing with Starks. He felt he was being wasted with what AEW had him doing so he was going to take an NXT deal and TK activated an optional extra year on his deal that AEW has and sent him off to sit at home.

TK is all awkward hugs and sperging out if you are someone he fanboyed out over watching in WCW/WWE during the last few decades but if he has only signed you due to internet telling him you are the next big thing then he will shit all over you if you dare to cross him.

The Elite seem to have managed to skirt around this so far because I think they know how to handle him but other hot indie/foreign workers are just happy to be there so they get a shock when the guy who signed them based on r/squaredcircle starts booking them like shit for some perceived slight.

You know your shit's bad when they preferred TNA over AEW.

A bit of context for the non-Leafs,

Sportsnet is one of two major sports networks in Canada. They are currently in the midst of a massive ass deal for sports rights with the NHL, a deal which largely has been unprofitable for them since day 1 and they've been in cost-cutting mode ever since.

Largely before this deal, hockey (Canada's national sport/religion) was split up between TSN (the other network), Sportsnet and the CBC. This current deal was one sided and gave the bulk of programming to Sportsnet. It'd be the equivalent of one of the major networks gobbling up Monday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, Thursday Night Football and all playoff rights for the NFL, while also retaining the bulk of broadcast rights for all large market games.

TNA likely was picked up because it was dirt cheap. Whether AEW shopping themselves around was a result of a cocaine-induced megalomania episode or Tony simply just kicking tires and doing due diligence (lol) is debatable, but I can't imagine TSN brass being too happy with his bullshit if he was doing this while they were still under contract or negotiating a new deal, given that TSN has treated AEW pretty well (at least when they first launched, I'm not sure how it is going these days as I rarely watch sports channels anymore.)
