I wouldn't say they are necessarily happy with the status quo. They just have less capacity for voicing dissent. Xi is a bit of a disaster of a leader.

China speed-ran 150 years of Western development in a little over twenty. China's middle class outnumbers the US population and it was created entirely in the last generation. The average Chinaman doesn't mind 50-hour weeks in the factory when they can still remember 80-hour weeks in the rice patties while living with no plumbing or electricity. Contentment might deteriorate in future generations as the pace of those quality of life improvements slows down (just like what happened in the West) but they still have a long way to go before then.

Twenty years from now the ‘conservatives’ on Kiwi Farms will be lamenting about how ‘Trump’s Supreme Court’ overturned affirmative action and made it extremely difficult for white people to get into good schools. It’s funny how the people who complain about Indians ‘shitting in the streets’ and Chinese acting like ‘bug people’ happen to have room temperature IQ, can’t get high-paying jobs, and can’t pull the Asian women they so supposedly hate. Here’s an idea: maybe if you can’t get a good job under the biggest job-creating president ever, it’s your problem.
