Man, all this sperging over immigrants in Engineering/Tech has me so depressed for staying in biological sciences and academia.

Academia has been importing immigrants to maintain research output for 40+ years because more and more domestic PhDs aren't willing to put up with academic salaries and academia doesn't hold the same status that it used to. I think domestic PhD grad students still represent the majority, however postdoctoral researchers are now like 75% immigrants (my institution is like 90% immigrant postdocs and it fucking sucks ass). Just 10 years ago, postdocs were 50% immigrant.

For context, academia pays absolute trash for fresh PhDs: typically 45 - 75k (depending on location). Even new professors are lucky to be paid more than 60 - 80k (eventually this goes up as you get grants). Despite having rare skills and extreme expertise, the disconnect with commercial markets creates a salary bubble that is decades behind.

Whatever your concerns are with importing labor in Engineering/Tech, academia has been quietly drowning in it for decades. Though most foreigners are just postdocs to get their foot in the door for industry jobs, it does mean we probably aren't replenishing good faculty (academic bubble go pop).

It didn't destroy their ability to do well in school. It was a nice way to grow up, and you got to make early mistakes (like quitting a job without lining up another, or pissing off a boss by not communicating effectively, or whatever) with only minor consequences to your life as a whole.

I think a lot of rich people think all American students are worthless because they look at schools full of wealthy do-nothing kids who plan to major in art and music and theater after their parents told them to go live their dreams.

It plays an essential role in growing up, too. Like it or not, America is organized around working for a company, and your teen years are the best time to learn the ropes regarding answering to somebody else, showing up on time, clocking in, managing your own paycheck and bank account, and so on. I think by the time I was out of school, though, I mostly saw Central Americans doing this jobs.

American university professors are the most revolting, entitled people on the planet. Academia's also exempt from the H-1B cap, which is why it's so saturated with underpaid foreigners.

The problem for corpos is simple: America First sounds nice until you remember most American workers expect to be paid a fortune for the same work that foreigners do for cheap.

So no shit, the Tech Bros will support more foreign workers, especially if they're skilled but poor. Most American workers are entitled in the eyes of the corporate system. It doesn't matter that Americans speak English better, live in the system, know how to act, the problem is that their price tag is too high for any corpo to consider them cost-effective. The only way to truly return the American worker to becoming the top dog in the labor market is to completely deregulate labor and make Americans work for less than the minimum wage with less safeguards and insurance. And there's no way in hell that Americans, right or left, would accept that.

Right-wing populist plebs think their candidates will stay true to their nativist, America-first rhetoric to "make America great again". They bought into the garbage which tells them that once they kick out enough brown people, the country will magically restore itself to a 1950s-style paradise. They haven't yet gotten it through their thick skulls that the Republican establishment is thoroughly mercenary and capitalist; the establishment will drop these America First people like a hot potato if it means getting more money. It has always been about money; if these fuckers could actually make money by going woke, they'd have done it by now. They only strung the America First crowd for a ride until their man could get into office, but once that's done, they have no obligations to keep up the facade.

The fact is, all that the nativist shit doesn't help the business class. To the tech bros and corporations, you're just shortening their recruitment pool and giving them nothing but entitled natives who will bitch in their face that they're not getting paid a fortune for just sitting around. Not to mention that many native citizens are poorly prepared for the stresses of the workplace, from the Millennial to the Gen Z workers, their resumes are inflated with bullshit college degrees, and those who have actual trade school credentials expect a fortune to be paid for their work.

That's just not good business for any corporation, which explains why they've employed third-world illegals and overseas workers for decades. At least those people keep their heads down and do as they're told, grateful for the minimum-wage crap they get. These third-worlders are grateful that they get the chance to become corpo bitches, whereas your average American Millennial or Gen Z worker regards being a corpo bitch as tantamount to biting down on a razor blade or shoving a live grenade up the ass.

At the end of the day, that nativist MAGA crap is the conservative equivalent to the left-leaning corporations putting up Pride Month banners; it's all just hot gas to garner support from the plebs, and once they no longer need that support, people like them will no longer be useful. And the people who fall for that "America First" voting policy are the conservative equivalent of all the gays and feminists who fall for the leftist propaganda that corporations like Disney and Warner Bros. pump out. They think the people at the top care about them, when they never did.

At the end, it is good for business whenever corporations hire people overseas or when the borders are opened up for third-world peasants to swarm into the country; it inflates the labor pool and brings wages down, it brings in some skilled but poor laborers who will work for pennies on the dime, and it allows corporations to be picky. Instead of settling for some entitled American worker who will try to negotiate for higher pay, the corpos can pick the peasant from Mexico or Pakistan who will work a grueling job for minimum wage or less. That saves the corpos a lot of money, which they can then invest on something else.

I know more than a few PHD candidates who straight dropped out of programs from Vanderbilt and other good schools when they realized the prospects for tenure track were nil and all of the postdoc research fellows were broke, overworked, and miserable.

They segwayed into tech and make solid money. You'd need to be a pajeet, deeply passionate, a DEI, or a retard to stay in academia.

Interestingly, foreign postdocs are catching wise to the fact that they can get a salary boost and protection from abusive faculty through unionization. I suspect this will accelerate the needed bubble burst.
