I think what they both said was awful but it came out much more tone deaf than outright evil.

Being charitable about this whole thing, I think the main issue is that both sides are completely talking past each other. One side keeps hammering, in a very roundabout and honestly inflammatory way, about how skilled workers make the country better and with their oversight they're going to make sure it's only highly skilled people, but on the other side you have people who are tired of being lied to about the immigration system and this whole thing just feels like another rugpull. The H1B system in theory could be fine if it was limited, but it clearly isn't shown from the data and rife with abuse even from the people who are championing it, so their promotion of it comes off disingenuous and more about cementing their bottom line. Vivek seems more willing to say the system is being abused and needs reform, but Elon is straight up championing it and saying anyone who disagrees is a racist. We'll see which side Trump falls on.

I laid out my terms for "when I'll doom" in this thread maybe a thousand pages ago, and I won't doom yet considering this is just rhetoric, but I am concerned about this whole thing. I feel personally like the rhetoric around immigration, which to me was the most important issue, has completely shifted over the past few weeks. We went from "mass deportations of all illegals, and arrest warrants for anyone who shelters them" to "we're going after violent criminals, and we're going to expand legal immigration to get more skilled workers." Not dooming, but concerned nonetheless.

I think that is eventually going to happen. They have burned any and all bridges with the left. Currently the rhetoric is shifting from "H1B is perfect" to "only SKILLED immigrants".
