A slave was given food, clothes, and housing. Does minimum wage or food stamps even do that? Maybe they were better off slaves?

Siding with @LORD IMPERATOR for a moment, he does have a point that old school WASPs had very strict definitions of white that would probably discount 80% of the white population today.

You would rather have been a slave than a poor person in 18th century United States.
Really the South should have given them a choice of joining the confederate army in exchange for freedom or a trip back to Africa.

Here's the thing during the 1950s and 60s southern whites and southern blacks would have more in common with each other culturally than they do with anybody from the north.

Actually most of that is just the common insult of other cultures of Europeans that they made towards each other Bismarck also said that to the north of him lies Africa to the South of him lies Africa and Napoleon is quoted in saying Africa begins at Spain.

And it's not even accurate Pennsylvania was settled by scouts Irish and Germans since the beginning the English mainly settled around what is now called New England.

Also insulting other European ethnic groups by calling them Asian African or Arab is something that goes back to the 1500s gene Bowden says that all Russians are mongolians.

That being said, the general premise that Ben is going for in that first quote is largely about assimilation as I read it.

I find it fucking hysterical describing Swedes and Germans (except Saxons) as swarthy, though.

I doubt the veracity of most quotes of Ben Franklin calling the  French of all people non-white. He was a notorious Francophile, fucker of French women, and the US Ambassador to France.

If only the the immigration situation of today was so simple that our biggest concern was letting in foreigners from certain parts of Western Europe or not and debating if they were truly "white" people. By modern day standards that all seems so alien and far away.

Yep the problem is the likes of Elon refusing to admit H1Bs are not being used for "skilled jobs" and it is in fact legalized indentured servitude.

This refusal to admit it, and the tone deaf proclamations of "they work harder than americans, we don't have the people in the USA to fill these jobs" have galvanized the opposition to the idea hard. They have done more damage to H1B visas with this stunt than a dozen attack ads would and for that I secretly love it all.

I said this before and I'll say it again: foreigners shouldn't be getting the best paid jobs either. In what universe does this remotely make sense? Rare solitary geniuses in single digit numbers are one thing, importing a whole ass upper class of foreigners is far, far worse than importing manual labor slaves.

All Elon and Vivek had to do was stay quiet and not sperg out on social media. It’s comforting to know that even rich people can drastically damage themselves (even if only their reputations, for now), and that money can’t prevent you from that stupidity. Ultimately, them thinking everyone else would just go along with it showed their hubris.

My point exactly. The Americans of the 1800s would see most Americans today in the same way we view Mexicans or Muslims.
