The hugbox was there because they believe it was "Ohhhhooo nooo it was the cringe culture and groomers online." They tried to be understanding and held out hope Sophia can grow up and change. Though I'd blame the groomers to a degree and bad company in general, yes, that hugbox is like people who justify that "oh he became a criminal because his dad was alcoholic and beat him and his mom every day and he got ditched by his girlfriend." Now, they realize it's no longer an excuse. There are lots of people out there who have suffered terribly and didn't become disgusting like Sophia. In fact, some of those people even go out to be advocates and workers in systems that allow them to be of help to people who have suffered the same plights!
I feel as though in Als case it was definitely a matter of just finding someone as terrible as they are. A lot of birdies closest companions were people who felt validated by birdies insanity or were just as insane and had birdie as an outlet (due to her being an opportunist with people).
