I think Andy knows that better than any of us,that's why despite burning literally ALL of his bridges and abandoning his old life he still does his "dæhd talks". By simply talking shop and having a simple father and son conversation about sports once a week or so he makes Tom optimistic enough to keep enabling Andy to live his Crinklz Cryptid lifestyle, but NEVER confident enough to send Andy on his way as the 40 year old man he is today.

I cannot stress that no parent wants their child to become so.. deplorable. They can't really grasp that the son they raised became a fetish freak that wants the world to cater to them. At one point, Andy was self sufficient and able to hold a job. then suddenly he behaves like a retard? And you see the veil behind it.

They want their son back, but they're in no condition to get that man back. Because that man never really existed. This is Andrew's true self, not retarded. He is probably relying on being hospitalised (free accommodation, free food and he can harass nurses to change his diapers), hence why the hospitals don't want to take him and why he goes to extremes to get hospitalised.

in 2016 his brother joe had a car accident and Andy might have cut his breaks causing it.
Poisoned his dad with sleeping pills and antifreeze, nearly killing him.
Andy is smart enough to understand and navigate police and medical procedures to the letter, but his goals are entirely in the imminent present. He wants things now, like a child, and he doesn't want the good times to end. Its why he "runs away" or threatens suicide when someone doesn't give him what he wants.
We're not fully convinced he's smart (definitely smart enough to navigate the american health care system,) but he's definitely not the dead-brained vegetable he claims to be.

What I never fully understood was how his attempted poisonings didn't see him put away in a jail or institutionalized much earlier. I'm pretty convinced this entire saga either ends with him imprisoned/institutionalized and drugged until he's catatonic, or actually getting killed while playing in traffic.

None of the Ditches seem... right.
I agree that any normal family would have abandoned Andy after the first poisoning, and he made their lives miserable for decades. I guess there was the hope that he'd recover because at one point he had a computer repair business and a job at wendy's but after his car accident he devolved into the poopsquatch we know. Its possible he has brain damage and I would commend the family for being hopeful they'd get the old andy back, but that's not looking like a possibility at this point.
(I figure you know this info, I'm just stating this for newcomers from metokur's streams.)
