A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The rape gangs have existed as a little sliver of anger in the back of my head that never really goes away and occasionally makes me fedpost. I've lost friends, like actual people I know as friends because they brushed it aside. I do not understand why people don't violently cut up the people that did this. It goes around and around in my head every time I am reminded of it; until I have to stop thinking about it or I'll actually start doing terrorism.

The thing that prevents people from doing what they absolutely should be doing; I think is multifceted. Communities are dead, so most people don't actually know anyone that has suffered from these fucking animals, so the spread of the anger is isolated and localised. The police then simply kick in the 2-3 people that do actually try something; and the pakis burn down their houses while they are in prison.

People don't like organising politically, because doing so as anything but a milquetoast party gets you doxxed, harassed, and potentially arrested. This is especially true as the police are permitted in the UK to enforce the law however they see fit; they have the right as officers to simply ignore crimes if they don't believe it to be in the public good to follow through. Which is why paki marches get ignored, and actual human beings marching get arrested, assaulted, hosed down with CS gas, and then have their lives destroyed. This is - in my opinion - cowardly, yellow, snivelling and weak. I am one of this people that doesn't want to organise, I have a good well paying job. I live in a nice area, and I have lots of people around me that would be horrified if I turned up on the news arrested for being racist or whatever. I get it, it's still cowardly, but I get it. We already live in a police state.

We have a culture around politeness and minding our own business. The police used to literally only turn up when you did things that were truly criminal, and other than that you were left alone. Most people still think that this is the case, so see police fucking with you as being deserved. This culture also means we tend not to mind if the neighbours are weird, and we try and let people get on with their lives. This is fine when everyone is human, but a lot of things being imported to our country are not human.

The main thing to bear in mind about the relevance of the paki vote is that they're a bloc, quite literally because it's the elders and uncles who post their votes for them, if they vote for you they're all voting for you and are very dependable in that case if they're on side. It depends where you live, it really changes ones opinions on the matter. Sadly most people outside of these northern towns don't really care too much about it as their so disconnected from "these type of people" that were prominently the victims of this. More so that the types of girls they targeted were very poor girls from working class, northern backgrounds as they'd be the easiest to tempt in, it's why you wont see anything on this scale somewhere where there's more money within families. This just exacerbates the issue as a lot of people really do look down on people from this part of the country and by extension these young girls.

As someone who did once live in one of these areas that had a grooming scandal and whilst I didn't personally know anyone who was effected, I knew some people who knew people who were and I can tell you this. A lot of people in these areas that were effected are basically at the point of looking for an excuse to begin ethnic cleansing all of them. Race relations in towns like Rotherham and the like will never be repaired and the utter contempt both sides have for one another is practically in the air. A lot of the grooming still happens openly, it's not a big secret on where it happens or what to think when a young school girl walks into a kebab shop on her own.

I live in a commuter town (born in Stevenage-yes I know) above London and it's balanced and the public transport is fine. Maybe I am personally oblivious or desensitised to it. Maybe it's because went to a state academy school and grew up in a council house that I'm comfortable around druggies and sand nigers, even if they call me a faggot etc, etc.
