Has anyone else noticed that Indians at the gym will wear things like polo shirts and button-ups? I remember seeing it a lot in college + they’d drown themselves in axe body spray so it made an impression on me

When you speak of "average" you are talking about the apolitical/unmotivated American citizen. This American gets about 5 minutes of total news coverage per week. These citizens don't care about jeets or Mexicans or Chinese. They're more concerned if they can put food on their table every night. They're effectively no different than publicly traded corporations; just figure out how to fix the problem by the end of the quarter and "it'll be alright."

The apolitical/unmotivated citizen does not care about any of this. They don't vote. They aren't paid enough to care. Some are extremely wealthy and have stopped paying attention to news and politics because they are now insulated through their wealth, set for life. They may work the graveyard shift at their 24/7 grocery store. They may work two part-time jobs to make ends meet. They may be a crypto bro looking to rug-pull stupid people. But they share the sentiment that "politics does not affect my daily life."

I want to emphasize that politics influence daily life, but the apolitical citizen either does not see it or does not care.

Some were political and stopped paying attention to it all because 90% of "news" is "reporting" on stupid retarded bickering about absolutely fucking nothing burgers.

There isn't an "average" American - there are too many diverse experiences in a country with ~900 major career pathways.
Don't talk about "average" - talk about the apolitical and figure out why they're apolitical.
Motivating unmotivated individuals who don't care about the state of affairs is extremely difficult. They may have cared once and saw how lawmakers pander to billionaires (shown in this thread) and the hopelessness of trying to root out that pervasive weed.

Why would they bother to engage their political system if their elected representatives don't give a shit about them?
Modern political campaigns in the US spend billions of dollars, and "winning" often comes down to winning over just 2 percent of voters.

Of course, I recognize there is a correlation between unchecked migration, extreme wealth inequality, and the legislatures bending over backward only to get fucked by those same corporations using accounting tricks and trademark offshoring to pay zero dollars in taxes on profits of $20 billion per year.
However, explaining that correlation to someone who knows and doesn't care, or actively remains ignorant is no different than talking to a brick wall.
The state of affairs does not matter to them, and big words and big issues hurt their brain.
Why would they bother to pay attention? They still need to work 5 days a week to provide for their kids, and voting will not change the status quo.

Your "traumatic event" for American citizens will only ever come in severe political repression and the unjust slaughter of civilians (ex. Ba'athist Syria / Syrian Civil War) or when a majority of people are actively getting poorer to the point that they can't put food on the table because there is an active shortage of food.
Hungry people riot. Americans are too obese and have too much food to ever think about rioting.

View prior history to see how the migration scenario almost always plays out - "Irish aren't white!" until they suddenly are white. "Germans will dilute our culture!" until they suddenly don't. "No Afghans!" until suddenly they're here. "No Chinese!" until they're here.
The more cynical side of me is betting that Trump will expand H1B visas and Indian migration will continue to rise.
Billionaires and lawmakers are banking on the same historical scenario playing out.

China's grab hags are at least a little bit understandable since a large portion of them are the ones that survived living through Mao's famines. You don't make it through Mao's famines by being nice and sharing.
