Megathread Jesse Singal Derangement Syndrome - jsingal69 vs TroonWorld

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Talk about autistic:
Autistic? Perhaps. Though it's part of a broader point about a certain level of laziness and lack of attention to detail they have in their reporting. A frequent example is not taking the time to learn the pronunciations of the names of the people they reference. It shows a lack of care that makes you start wondering what other little details they're missing.

The other example I gave about Jesse using google to search for pages on this site and not finding results really made me call all of this into question. It defies the basic sense you'd think someone who reports on niche Internet stuff would have. Plus, Josh has posted in numerous places about his issues with google and search results; it's not hard to find.

A lot of the errors are probably because they no longer have a good researcher (Tracing did fantastic work on the Keffals episodes), and Jesse and Katie don't really do much research themselves on this type of topic. If you're gonna get spoonfed then make sure your feeder is detail-oriented and preferably autistic.

I still appreciate Jesse and Katie's rather fair take on the whole situation, and I love that Erriot got some mainstream attention. Maybe he'll freak out at Jesse on Bluesky even harder, and earn himself a second episode.

I mean, it's a stupid podcast where they gossip about internet drama, you expect them to spend their daylight hours toiling away on hardcore autistic research every week?
They're journalists who take pride in nuanced and fact-based reporting. That's how they present themselves: reporting on Internet bullshit and getting into the weeds. Is it wrong to hold them to a higher standard than some random retards with a microphone shooting the shit?

Details found while researching and building an understanding—like pronunciations or little parenthetical details—are easy to add while writing research notes. I'm confident they're not recalling all of this from memory.

I mean, yeah? Kind of? It's their job? A stupid job, sure, but one which they're paid rather well to perform. I discontinued Primo last month for this reason. If it's not a topic that directly relates to them or their single area of expertise (troonery) then they are mostly useless. The video game coverage a couple months back was just dire, and I'm dreading the prospect of them discussing the recent stupid drama on Twitter surrounding Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey.

Do they have any research assistant currently? I remember them shouting out a Jessica at some point, but I don’t think I’ve noticed it for a while.

They used to have someone called "The Mysterious Lex" who goes by LexerLux on both Reddit and Twitter. He seems odd and it's unclear what he actually did for them. Neither host announced his departure which makes me think he was quietly let go.

After Trace, they allegedly got someone called "Jessica The 80's Baby" who is even more mysterious. She has a Substack, but it only links to BAR open threads.

He does seem odd. More degenerate than Trace, who seemed to be able to balance out his weird with a socially functioning, normie side to his personality.

We might learn some more about him in the next couple of days:

The vagueness of it tells me that they are mostly fact checkers, unlike Trace, and neither has the skill needed to make major contributions to the show.

There is a difference between getting into the weeds on something and focusing on a detail that is technical and totally meaningless to 99% of their audience. We don't need to know, nor do we care to know, what a DNS mail exchange record is, all that matters is that it was something that a tech bro like Elliot should have known, and because he didn't, his complaint was faulty.

I only mention MX records because they're mentioned literally seconds after the words "email server" and were quickly explained as "Just a way of looking up who owns or operates a website", which seems contradictory to "This genius did an MX record lookup and assumed they hosted our entire site."
Jesse: It's fine. The most important thing is he's pinning this on Trans Lifeline. He's saying that Liz Fong Jones is sort of acting on behalf of Trans Lifeline to protect Trans Lifeline. Gotcha. He continues. Katie, please read this.

Katie: This email falsely accuses me as whomever of criminal behavior. No one is blackmailing this fucking troll. The only thing I'd want them to do is fuck off. I don't know if they're intimidated. I don't care. They should be more worried of the fact that they're openly using their at google.com association for non-work related activities. such as fucking with people they don't know and who never heard of them until today. Additionally, the person they've contacted is not our host. They host our email server. This genius did an MX record lookup and assumed they hosted our entire site. What's MX record? I don't know.

Jesse: Just a way of looking up who owns or operates a website. So now read the actual email. Liz Fong Jones apparently sent the wrong address. This was Thursday, August 17th, 2017. Josh Moon puts this in his post.
If you looked at the MX records for my personal websites, by this logic, you'd think protonmail owned/operated all of them. Do you not see how these little ambiguities add up to muddy a reader/listener's understanding as a whole? The devil is in the details, as they say. Giving the correct answer would've taken up 2 extra seconds of runtime; seems worth the effort to me.

These are little details they would usually clarify in a sentence or two if writing an article for a traditional paper. They're important for accurately reporting a story.

It comes down to how many stories they have to report per month as a 3-person (counting 2 0.5 support staff) operation. I enjoy the show but it’s hard to argue that they cut corners pretty outrageously.

Refusal to learn anything beyond the bare minimum needed, or not having any curiosity or wanting to learn for the sake of learning is part of why society is such a mess.

One of the reasons that troons were able to get as popular as they did and get as much power as they did is partly because people refused to learn beyond the bare minimum "trust the science" talking points. That lack of curiosity dragged this problem out much longer than it needed to be
