It's just being reductive for the sake of humour. You could reduce 1812 to being a British victory due to the burning of the white house. Canadians also like to claim the burning as being their act despite being in control by the British at the time but I digress. The revolutionary war was an American victory, with the notable asterisk of French help. Not sure if you could count Prussia since it was just that one general. Edit: I think there's a desire to emphasise these earlier wars, since in less than 80 years America and the UK were already fighting side by side in China.
