"Doxing" in 2025

I like phonebooking as long as it's turned into an acronym. "Hey we need a PB on this guy, can someone compile a PB?" "LMAO get PB'D nigger" much easier to say. I wanna keep it as few syllables as possible if it's gonna be used as a verb.

I think phonebooking is the best because, it explains that people get the public info for someone from public sources ie a phonebook. It's easier to say than 411ing.

The following terms have been suggested, including both verbs which describe the act of looking something up, and the noun which describes a compilation of this information.
  • Phonebooking.
  • Unmasking. *
  • Deanonymize / Deanon
  • Infodump / Infodumping
  • Sunshining.
  • Exposing.
  • Receipts.
  • Deets. * per shawnphase
  • 411.
I agree that to protect the forun, we should refrain from using "doxing". The journalists simply were successful in changing the meaning of that word in a way that its continued usage, even with the stated reference to it's original meaning, would blow back into our faces.

However, using any of these new terms may not be a solution. All it takes is an addendum to the wikipedia article about doxing that states that "alternative terms used by malevolent online trolls in an effort to conceal their illegal activities are: sunshining, phonebooking, ... blah blah". Immediately, the new chosen expression will be associated with the crime.

It's a weakness if the new term is so special that it lacks an already widely accepted definition. It will be easy to simply redefine it, just as they did with "doxing".

Instead, we should use a term that is well established, has a meaning similar to what we are doing (finding and publishing information), and which ideally has a positive connotation in the circles of our critics. Such an expression is much harder to redefine.

That's why I would argue that we should use "journalism" and "doing journalism on somebody".

Edit: typos

it doesn't need a term IMO. better to use precise language to avoid this kind of hijacking of terms. "archiving" is the only term I'd say is close enough in connotation to be acceptable. but when you say things like "archiving their posts" or "an archived post from this guy" it does kind of make you sound like you're obsessively saving shit like a creep. just say what you're doing: reposting shit from some retard so you can laugh at them. using bullshit doublespeak terms like "unmasking" is a tactic needed by bad actors like Dong-Gone because their public image, and their own private obsession with it, is hung entirely on their ability to hide the disgusting truths of their behavior with anodyne language to make themselves look noble and virtuous. you cannot play that game with a tranny. they know the rules better than you, because they play it every day of their cursed lives.

the tranny's kryptonite, and the tactic that ultimately defeats them, is simple honesty and staying in the daylight. unlike the tranny, we're not trying to hide who we are - quite the opposite. and besides, the bad faith critics that make cynical assumptions and try to smear the site and its users as a seething den of sadistic cyberbullies will not be deterred by a simple shifting of terms. this site will always have an aura of stank surrounding it due to the lies and seething of the idiots who have found themselves afflicted by the consequences of their own retarded behavior, and I believe there's little to be done about that. but I do agree that the term "doxing" or "doxxing" is better off dropped.

That's why I would argue thar we should use "journalism" and "doing journalism on somebody".

I like phonebooking because zoomers have no idea what a phonebook is. Sunshining is cute. 411 is nostalgic. I can't decide.

I think if Phonebooking, Deanon, or 411 grew to replace doxing, I wouldn't be too sad.

Anything but "receipts". It's already inextricably entwined with social media SJWs.

I'm partial to info dumping, because that's exactly what it is and I hate euphemistic cutesy terms to describe legal activity.

what about "dexing", as in rolodexing? Similar enough to make it clear that it's similar and use the slang like dexx, but is a clear difference that can be pointed to a origin.

and that way if you have any stickers or merchandise that says "dox" on it, you can edit the o to look like an e and reuse it. Plus it'll be mildly infuriating for people who just got dexxed because you can play words games back at them like "oh it was a typo, this was what we meant"
