UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

He's not wrong, Farage is holding back the right massively in this country and he's not pushing anything in Parliament on even attempting to unite the right. He's as bad as the rest of them and I hope he and his cult of personality hang with him.
Farage isn’t going anywhere since he owns the party, but his only concern is the same fraudulent grift he pulled with UKIP. I’m sure he didn’t expect or even want to win Clacton but now he’s stuck with it.

Hasn’t he been to the U.S more than his own home constituency? God knows how he won his seat, a glorified grifter with questionable hostile money. Though I suppose those who voted for him in Clacton probably don’t care much, I loved it as a simple kid, pure shit hole now.

He calls this “representing Clacton abroad” or something. All he’s ever cared about is grandstanding for his own ego. It was the same when he was the MEP. It’s why he doesn’t even touch remigration and why he said on that podcast that Britain needs to accept that Muslims are here to stay and re-orientate accordingly. He wants to leverage himself to “pick up Muslim votes” whatever that means. It’s why he’s spent more time talking about milk and biscuits in hotel rooms than he has about actual issues.

The NHS is a money pit.
When you've seen shit like: paracetamol for £3.33 when in Tesco it's 50p, office chairs costing >£1k for a shitty thing you could get in Argos for £100, disposable curtains around beds costing £10 each when they could be found for a tenth of the price... you get VERY jaded.

Procurement is a massive problem. The NHS bigwigs give the contracts to their cronies who sell their products at a massive markup, meaning our marvellous NHS is paying £2k for a desk worth £400 max. We saw the worst of this during Covid.
All the "consultants" (not medical) need to be axed because they're just finding more ways to spend money. The locum budget a massive drain. Staff are realising that they make a hell of a lot more working locum than full time, so many are doing that instead.

Much more needs to be invested in social care for the elderly to alleviate bed blocking. GP facilities need to be expanded to cope with the growing population who can't see a doctor. Due to this they go to A&E and cause bottlenecks, leading to >12hr waiting times.

All the people who screech about the NHS being underfunded don't see that you can throw billions at it but it wont improve because resources are massively mismanaged.

•Axe 80% of exec level and non medical consultants, invest in GP recruitment NOT physician assistant noctors, invest in social care.
I've just fixed the NHS. Give me medal.
Late, cause of work, but also since work in hospital, can confirm it's very much that. Money is definitely going to the wrong places/pockets. Many of the wards have bake sales/tombolas etc just to get funds so they can improve areas, or get more things for the kids wards/elderly care. The lifts are abysmal, always breaking down and slow, but there's no money to get new ones (when they break a lot, it drastically slows things down as patients in beds cannot be transported quickly and large machines also can't be brought to higher floors). Working with said machines, I can say they are grossly overcharged for items that regularly get broken and need repair more often than not. I feel for my manager, she tries her best, but the costs add up and we end up having to make do for a while, which results in shortages of things like nebulisers and even the fancy new infusion machines are running low due to breaking all the time (despite costing hundreds of pounds each).
Apologies for the long rant, it's just all so tiresome.

Ignorant Amerimutt here.

Why is it that every MP in Britain is hellbent on preventing the rape gang investigation? Is it just to cover their own asses or do they actually believe the findings of such a report will start a riot?

They close ranks to protect their own.

Douglas Murray has always been pretty strong and loud on the grooming gangs and mass immigration. Also he, unlike the prime minister, doesn’t see the need to use a bunch of women as a shield and goes out and has sex with grown men like a boss.
takes a man's man to fuck another man in the arse

Musk is a dork but his heart is in the right place here. So what if he's cack-handed? He's done more in the last week to bring the plight of raped British girls out to the world than all of Britain did in decades. The right wing needs to stop looking gift horses in the mouth.

The absolute state of OTC meds at Boots will never cease to amaze me. Over in the Land of the Free you can get all this for $23/18 GBP, no questions or ID asked

Britbongs would rather their daughters get raped by inbred hicks from a literal shithole and elect those rapists to parliament before accepting help from rocket man.

it's illegal to sell large pill bottles like this in ol Blighty to "stop suicides"

don't ask why there are so many suicides. particularly of young women and girls.

The party that Elon is supporting is a private limited company whose "party leader" has a controlling stake in and all "members" are actually just registered supporters. That same party leader is on record saying that the Islamification is unavoidable and cannot be changed, and the best option is to simply try to "integrate" them as a voting bloc that can vote for some deranged civnat ideal of the Yookay.

I get that Elon's come out swinging against Farage but the way that Reform is structured means that he cannot be toppled as party leader unless he resigns and divests from the company. Even if he resigns it's not enough because he owns the company.

Perfection is the enemy of the good. It's better than nothing. Go tell Musk that then, he has a whole platform he's addicted to posting on.

Learned helplessness really sucks to deal with. Entire nation was browbeaten into accepting the worst treatment

If Nigel is planning on selling then this has got me assuming that Musk will be the one buying but is setting up a narrative where he 'wins' rather than just using his money again because he's already getting criticised for his buyout of the us presidency.

It's a dumb argument to make as well. The argument is "We have guns Britain does not and that's why they have this issue" when America has just as bad a grooming problem as us and despite citizens having the means to do something about it they choose not to for the same reason British people decide not to do something about it, Bystander syndrome. No one on either side of the Atlantic wants to risk their family's livelihood and safety for nothing to change.
The US has more than our fair share of problems, but the grooming gangs thing is a result of very specific circumstances in the UK. If you have proof of massive Muslim gang rape gangs in the US, I’d be happy to read it.

The UK is much stricter on election integrity than the US, which is why they got pissed with Musk trying to worm his way into influencing things. No way in hell would Reform sell to him, without significant backlash atleast

I agree if it was publicly known but that takes time and as the other discussion shows, a lot more than you would think can be covered up. Foreign access to politics / political figures isn't new here - remember Fergie getting divorced from Andrew for selling political access to him? (and getting her toes sucked?) that was in 2010 and there's been a mass sell off of most of british infrastructure over the last 20 years since then, we're in a very vulnerable place.
