The screenshot might be hard to read but some troon (claims to be cis woman sure) made a comic about how some parents will pretend to support their troon kids because they don't want to lose them, and it's really gross and offputting. I'm stockholm syndroming my dad yay!

I legit can't tell if this is a post by an advertising bot or not apparently the account had commented about the story before but it's a really bizarre post to make. "Thanks [Brand] for saving my life, sure my fiance died but at least you saved me."

Don't get me started on dead pet posts. r/CatsAliveAndWell exists because half of r/cats is attention seeking rainbow bridge announcements.

I can give you some more.

You have the raging feminists mothers;

Those can't accept that parenting can't be a 50-50 thing when breastfeeding is involved. You automatically handle all the feedings, all the night wakings, and when baby is fussy, anyone holding him/her seeks out Mum's magical boobs. Accepting that fact would shake the decades-long propaganda about gender equality, so formula fixes this disperancy.

The "I fucking love science" mum/father;

That type will rave about the multinutrients in the formula, and believe breastfeeding is something for the poor, the Amish or the antivaxxers. They are baffled by the fact breastfeeding benefits the mother as well, and will call you a conspiracy theorist when you mention that they paid pediatricians and nurses to promote formula to vulnerable, confused mothers and that Nestlé has sent free cans to African and Asian countries for 6 weeks - approximately the time needed for lactation to stop, thus turning them into customers by necessity.

The control freak mothers:

Those aren't in tune with their bodies and don't trust their instincts or their babies to communicate their needs. They are on a schedule, so baby needs to be on a schedule as well. Memorizing the ounces and serving every three hours is easier than feeding on demand, and you can always make extra to knock baby out and make him/her sleep through the night.

Sadly, the largest category is the mentally compromised mothers;

Those come to the table with either self or properly diagnosed ADHD, depression, autism and general neurodivergency, which is further exasperated by baby blues/postpartum depression-anxiety/ an absent-avoidant father.

Breastfeeding is a very vulnerable and extremely intimate action for the mum, as she's solely responsible for the child's nutrition and much more so for the child's emotional well being. The stress and responsibility is understandably too much for these mums, so the attempts are self-sabotaged to the point that mixed feeding devolves into exclusive formula feeding.

That can happen to any young mother, but what makes them Redditors are the facts that; the guilt and bitterness over that failure makes them advocates against "breast is best," how they've been/currently are in therapy, but they cannot rid of their anxiety and handle their emotions for babies sake, and how they seek a hug box and lies from other Redditors.

The collectivization played a massive role in the failure of soviet agriculture, but the analogy of the USSR is a fantastic one because with redditors it goes even further. Soviet scientific top brass completely (very famously under Trofim Lysenko) completely denied the science of genetics because (according to him) had been based in Bourgeoisie thought and was "Counter revolutionary". Tsarist Russia also a had a famously fucked up agricultural system, but so long as the farms produced food and met procurement, they were more or less allowed to grow the food/ tend the animals in the ways they wished too (Russia has always been very authoritarian).

But then the Revolution happens, and these absolute jackass scientist suck up to the right people (Stalin) and suddenly going against the "Science TM" will have you branded and killed or sent to the gulag. It wasn't Urbanites going to work on the farms, you must remember the USSR was trying to get people in the cities to work in factories and heavy industry. It was those Urbanites who knew jack shit about farming forcing the farmers to farm in the way they wanted to.

To give a brief example: Farmers all across the USSR were encouraged to "Vernalize" grain seeds. This was done by germinating the seeds and exposing them to cold temperatures, now it is true that some plants need to be exposed to cold temperatures in order to flower or bear fruit, BUT there is a key difference. Russia already had cold hearty grains AND vernalizing grain seeds, tens of thousands of tiny little seeds, keeping them all moist, flipping them with pitch forks to prevent mold, destroying seeds that have already germinated in the process is a fucking nightmare. Why were the farmers doing all of this retarded shit? Because Lysenko (and his other capo scientists) had greatly exaggerated the success of vernalized seeds on the private farms that the USSR used to conduct its experiments. A farm mind you had access to Tractors, plows, fucking fertilizer, all of witch your average collective farmers didn't have. Vernalized grain performed AT BEST as grain planted in the traditional fashion but TOOK TWO TIMES AS MUCH SEED GRAIN to fill a plot of land. Millions of farmers were forced to do all of this extra work (farming is very hard work, especially when you have no fucking equipment, like your average soviet farmer). Not only were people starving they were forced to do all this extra bullshit for nothing. All because Lysenko (who was not a farmer, nor a scientist) lied and said it would work.

The collectivization was horrific but the combination of it and the "Trust the Scientists Bigot" tier bullshit was the real icing on the cake. So many blatant lies from scientist in power, any peasant who'd been farming for generations knew this, but had no power to do anything because they were starving and dying. I would really encourage all Kiwis to read up on Soviet Era science, because holy fuck does it bear some amazing parallels to the shit we see today. It really is all fun and games when the wacky ideas you see are centered around troon bullshit, but as soon as these people get into agriculture and food, people will die and do it to the tune of millions.

EDIT: I really like the book "Soviet Agriculture" By Zhores Medvedev (can you tell) and "Lysenko and the Tragedy of Soviet Science" by Valery N. Soyfer for a dive into the horror show that was the USSR. They both are pretty dry, but just simply detailing the clusterfuck that was this time period is both horrific and enlightening
