The Communities and history overview


History of SS13
​

It is beyond the scope of this thread to go through the entirety of SS13 and all its servers. Such an exercise would be in futility given the rapid succession of servers. As such, I refer you to the goonstation and /tg/ station wiki (Archive-goon, Archive-/tg/) on the history of the game.

This document will attempt to flesh out history not explained, and history now deleted in the purity spirals now so common.

In re: Lack of sources <2018.
Much of the old lore and drama is lost to the link rot of time. You'll have to accept the author (and others') recollections. Tread with suspicion, after all the author is a bayfag.

Pre-Opensource era (2003-2009)
[To be added pending verification of some lore]

The big three (2010-2013)​

This era is the utter dominance of Goonstation, baystation, and /tg/.

Goon originates from the Something Awful forums, for which there is a thread. Baystation originated from the bay12 forums (Dwarf Fortress) around 2007-2009. /tg/ originated from 4chan's /tg/ board around 2010.

Baystation lost association with bay12 around 2009/2010. See old forum thread here (archive). The original baycode was not based off of goon (disputed), but was rebased to the 2009 goon's SVN in the early days and this codebase is lost to time after multiple rapid ownership changes of Baystation's github.

The third generation, Licensing issues and major improvements (2013-2019)
​

At around this time, more servers with unique features began to appear, this includes Traitor Death Match (TDM), Facepunch / Corporate Mercenaries, /vg/, Paradise, Colonial Marines, Animus Station (first major RU server), Tau Ceti (Major RU server), Apollo amongst others.

Baystation would two more times, once to 4407 codebase ("Luna") and then to /tg/ due to code issues. Many RP servers would follow suit andthis would later culminate in a major split, the creation Polaris (c. 2012-2014) which is the upstream codebase for many HRP roleplay communities like V.O.R.E and later most significantly today, Aurora. Baystation would never "fully recover" from this and the "bay is dead" line became an ironic joke in the playerbase. Somewhere around 2016-2018, baystation would join the hub publicly.

F-Tang and Sabrina were both major baydevs at one point. Rip the old bay forums, an endless salt-mine.

Another major instance of public drama in this era here is the collapse of BestRP and it's successor Unbound Travels. It is the first "major" instance of server drama that survived linkrot. See the post for specific milk.
tl;dr: Purlek took server money and DDOSed other servers and was a giant fag. Shitshow ensues.

Paradise would eventually become the pseudo-sucessor to UT, but these events would be repeated many times in the future...

Code licensing issues
​

The original two SS13 code sources were Gibbed's decompilation resulting in the current Goon codebase and r4407 (archive) as BY-NC-SA 3.0 and Hobnob's decompilation under LGPL-3 (Archive). Hobnob's decompilation is not known to have been used in any major downstreams aside from possibly pre-goon baystation.

However, /tg/ and Baystation all use GPLv3 for the licensing, but are both based off r4407. This marks them in violations of the BY-NC-SA 3.0 license. It is not compatible with the GPL, Goonstation seems unlikely/unwilling to enforce it, however...

In 2015, /tg/ moved from GPL3 to AGPL (archive) to close what is known as the "ASP (Application Service Provider) loophole", this allowed for one to keep the source code "private" because software over a network is not considered "distribution". In 2016 (Archive) (but origins are earlier). /tg/ introduced new Master Controller known as StonedMC (written by MSO), a major improvement over the previous master controllers reducing lag. Unsurprisingly, most current codebases incorporated it and are now AGPL.
This has led to milk in situations where DMCA take-downs, lawsuits, and other shenanigans occurred over the licensing.

The ssethtide (2019)
​

ERP server dominance on the Hub, and 3rd generation servers (2020+)

ERP or "Erotic Roleplay", is when people go and internet sex on text in SS13. ERP has always been around since the earliest versions of the game. Originally most rulesets allowed to admins to clown on erpers (Notably Goon and Bay). However, they were mostly all banned by the era of 2015 off publically listed servers on the hub.

At someone point, ERP became the most popular servers on the hub. The author believes it was Citadel that started this trend. Some notable servers of these include:

Baystation devs leave in 2020 for Nebula

Baystation in 2020 had an incident culminating with the majority of the dev team leaving after being bitched at by admins. The maintainer for the baystation codebase known as Sabrina/Babydoll (archive) stepped down, and MistakeNot4892 (A major baystation contributor since Luna) created Nebula (archive) shortly after, as "a modular codebase for developing more flavored versions without having debt". Other notable contributors who left around that time include the following, Chinksy (archive), Xales/Mloc (archive, a higher up admin on bay), Mikomyazaki (archive), Daniel Thompson/Cakey/CakeQ (archive), Lohikar (archive), Psycommando (archive), and Mattoks (archive).

Mistake (and some others) would return to Baystation for a period as a coder before leaving permanently.

SS14
​

SS14 has been in the works since early 2015. The major player to this is PJB (who has his own post). The gist of this story is that the game is not in a functional state, the code is a mess, and a cabal of the main branch devs ("Wizden") are all insane and will deauthenticate a server preventing new players due to wrongthink.

Wizden v. Skye​

Syke is the leader of SSMV (Space Station Mutiverse), a fork of the Wizden authentication toolset due to the insanity of troons like PJB for blocking anyone they don't like from the game.
Unsurprisingly, they make some shitty ass porn game. Surprisingly, Jezithyr (a now former Wizden higher up) cracked Skye's porn game on F95zone, a porn game website (archived as pictures as thread is private), causing Syke to go on a muti-page meltdown on F95 and post this (archive) 4,000 word long criticism of Wizden.

The coup of /tg/ against it's host MSO
​

MSO, or Mister Stonedone (@A Bear In The Woods), is a "Men's right activist" and repressed homosexual living in Seattle, Washington. He has single handedly been the host of /tg/'s back-end since around 2010 to 2025.

The long story short is that he was that he wanted to be in a "Host Emertius" situation, got upset at an (alleged) IRL woman admin and deadmined them, sperged out and pulled the plug. He continues to try and farm attention here and on reddit.

There are several major codebases within SS13 itself, and then the "remakes": The big two this thread focuses on are SS13 (a) and SS14 (a) since the majority of milk derives from these two.

Q: WTF is this and why is this relevant?
A: A detailed, complete, history of SS13 would be outside the context of this thread, a general explanation of the history of SS13 and the major codebases, with their respective differences in play-style is explained below, some lesser known codebases are noted for milk.

SS13 Codebases​

• Goonstation (Revision 4407)

This codebase it is the origin branch for almost all major servers past and present, including the two major non-goon codebases, /tg/ and Bay

• Goonstation (Current)

Goonstation was closed sourced until 2020. The code is notably different from all other codebases and uses a BY-NC-SA license. Gameplay differs significantly from other major branches and there are many "in-jokes" the normal SS13 player would not understand.

• /tg/ Station

/tg/ station originated from r4407 on 4chan's /tg/ game board. Notable for the introduction of the AGPL license with Stoned MC after 2015/01/08 00:00 GMT to all code affecting many other codebases. Several figures moved on to SS14. Has fast paced combat (only 2 intents vs 4) and less emphasis on role-play, with native BYOND compile not supported.

• Baystation ("Luna" and GPL)

Luna is an old fork of the r4407 codebase by Baystation. It is no longer actively developed. However, it is the "most recent" open sourced code which a closed-source server can be made. Notable active downstream are Lifeweb, Colonial Marines, and D2k5.

• Baystation (AGPL)

The current Baystation originated from the bay12 forums (Dwarf Fortress), but has long shed the association. Baystation is/was the other major branch of SS13 from /tg/. Many features are reworked to facilitate better roleplay. Notable differences include using ZAS compared to /tg/ LINDA, in-game mechanics limited by age/rank, more lethal medical with no cloning ("Brainmed"), a movable ship as the "station".

• V.O.R.E Station

An indirect dowstream of AGPL Bay (technically Polaris), V.O.R.E. station is the originator of many an "ERP" (Erotic roleplay) branches and associated lunacy. It has somehow avoided itself from allegations of pedophillia and ERP with minors to the author's knowledge. Not listed publicly on the server list.

• Fallout Servers

/tg/ AGPL downstream. Original idea dev/spriter was yeeted from the now defunct baystation forums. Many are 18+ ERP furry servers that you can allegedly fuck a deathclaw. Original Fallout13 dev wanted it to be an ERP server so no suprise.

• Lifeweb

Closed source based of r4407. Run by a Russian and has heavy roleplay standard. Source of two major incidents of milk. Used to require an old < 2016 account or money to enter. Very different from all other branches. Spawned a bunch of /tg/ AGPL derived clones popular on the hub as of 2024.

• Citadel

(VENERABLE GRANDMASTER) SierraKomodo is the current (2020-2025+) maintainer of the baystation github. MTF trans, and one of the major reasons baystation is now a shell of it's former self. I'm an amateur self-taught programmer, primarily in PHP/MySQL. I do have some very minor experience toying around with other languages such as Python, Visual Basic, and JavaScript - Funnily enough, my first experience in any form of programming/scripting was in writing VBScript plugins for a piece of software called StealthBot, and yet here I am with little to no real experience in VB, and working on projects in PHP instead.

I currently work for a company as a web developer, handling back-end systems that generate XML files from SQL data, transmit these XML files to a third party, retrieve response XML files, and parse the responses, as well as the program that handles calculating accounting and tax data.

BestRP was started by AbbeyRiley 2013/2014 ish. Abbey quit and shutdown the server sometime in 2014 (with Necladun from that going off to form Paradise), Purlek "took over" as the server had no forums or contact method, pushed all the work to Emanuel Basil. Took "donations", spent it all on private shit and ddosing other servers (archive). The game master (and subsequent host) sshado with Emmanuel Basil (another GM) then posted paypal receipts of this retardation (only partial receipts were recovered). Luz were had.
