Honestly, I don't know why, but after focusing a lot on 70s anime, I've started to realize that lolicon is so ubiquitous nowadays due to the nature, tropes, and tendencies of anime for a long time. This combination of young/young-looking characters and melodramatic, serious, adult situations that anime has perpetuated has created an environment where we're comfortable treating kids (albeit fictional) like adults, which pedophiles have taken advantage of. Maybe there's some cultural context I'm missing, but now it's straight-up disturbing to watch stuff like the original Gundam, after watching stuff like Raideen, Yamato, and Mazinger that either have characters that look like (or are) adults of some definition, are clearly quite defanged and low-stakes (sort of like a more serious Western cartoon), or are perpetually a few steps away from being a rubber hose cartoon, and just take in that these are children and teenagers in serious situations with real consequences (not to mention that the Gundam characters would retain their youthful appearances even as adults for marketing purposes). It's very sadistic in a way, and we all know pedophiles are sadists. It's like if something like Shed 17 attracted a bunch of autists who think EVERYTHING has to be sooper dark and realistic and said autists would go on to influence animation for decades afterward. God, come to think of it, the only reason anime has gotten so popular these past few years probably is because porn has created pedophilic sadists who will only engage with media that's similarly sadistic and pedophilic. It's probably yet another reason all trannies love tranime (aside from their /d/egeneracy); if kids (or characters that look like kids) are old enough to be in circumstances with adult levels of violence and tragedy, then there's no reason 14-year-olds can't make life-altering decisions against their parents' will, and there's no reason adults can't be lazy retards who contribute nothing to society.
