If the owners were kind enough to leave a door or window open, animals do generally have a sense to escape fires/natural disasters & get themselves to safety. I've seen angus cattle (for anyone here who lacks knowledge of cows, they tastier they are, the dumber they tend to be) escape brush fires, tornadoes, and even floods unscathed.

I'm heading over to help a friend survey the damage to his area, as a large portion of his neighborhood burnt down. Part of my emergency gear includes a leash for any potentially in need critter. I'll keep you kiwis updated on the devastation. The wind has basically stopped, and the air quality is marginally better.
