I don't think a harsh prison sentence would even be that much of a deterrent (sadly) in this particular instance. If you look through the chatlogs and shit it is obvious this guy was doing it purely for an adrenaline rush and didn't really care if he would get caught eventually. If he does get a pitiful 3 years for this, then it'll just show that swatting is here to stay. It will embolden degenerates to do it because what the fuck is the law gonna do. Even if you get caught you get a suspended slap on the wrist.
If a billionaire in the US did the same, he would probably never even see the inside of a jail cell for it.
The only way for a harsh prison sentence to be an actual deterrent for people like this is that swatting is elevated to an attempted murder charge and investigated with extreme priority as soon as it happens (if anything there should be some sort of new charge related to it, which is as serious as attempted murder). They let this guy fuck around for like 3-5 years before catching him which is just pathetic. Given what was shown of his opsec, if they had really given a shit early on they could've caught him much earlier.
But from what I have read, this case in particular and the general increase of swattings has lead to their being some coordination between states and various departments, which hopefully means they will be investigated a lot quicker than they have been previously. It will also mean they need to do some work on changing the way VoIP services are allowed to be use (I'm not fully clear on what services he used though). I think that the proliferation of eSIMs may probably also contribute to a rise in swattings unfortunately.
