Yeah, even as a self admitted sad indie loser pedant, I have genuinely no fucking idea how to recommend music to someone with the listening tastes outlined in the OP. @Aquila_Iacob you know what, go and listen to the Richard D. James album and I Care Because You Do and Drukqs, all by Aphex Twin. Let's start with some Aphex Twin and then idk you can return and we can act as some kind of failed algorithm made of meat. Oh, and Tapestry by Carole King. We're looking for a point somewhere between Carole King and Aphex Twin and we can take it from there.

I'd say this was probably the last GOOD album, which is why people remember it fondly. It was by no means the best though.

By any measurable metric, Michael Jacksons "Thriller" is the best Album by vote of the market. Most money ever adjusted for inflation, and most purchased vinyl record ever too.

The issue with the Mars Volta is they way too insist upon themselves and their music can become extremely tedious at times

Thats fair a lot of people like that one because their 2 biggest hits are off that one. But if you enjoyed that, I'd say give them a shot, Switzerland is the one I usually recommend to people just getting into them since it has some more conventional bops and doesn't really delve as deep into the nonsense as something like Señor Smoke.

It is definitely not the best album ever made, but I've loved Hawaii: Part II (there is no part 1) for a very long time. It's got variation and a very odd tone to it, but I haven't found much like it.
