Live updates: Brush fire burns in Pacific Palisades as Santa Ana winds blast Southern California - Live video at link

How easy is it to see a satellite in orbit with the naked eye? It's impossible.

My question is if someone wanted to burn shit that way in the most subtle manner possible with rays or whatever could we even prove or disprove it?

If this is a serious question, as I understand it, you can do a lot to 'stealth' various forms of attacks but a giant fucking laser in orbit that can generate enough energy to cause fires on the ground, that would need to be enormous and have a variety of signatures that it would be easily seen with any sensor worth anything, even in some cases on the ground.

The thermal signature alone would almost be like a smaller, second sun to infrared sensor technology, I think. You can do a lot to absorb and redirect radar waves and trick the eye, but you can't just make heat disappear, especially in space. This goes for a lot of other forms of detection as well. You'd have to have a huge heatsink of some description, and then... y'know, you have a huge heatsink, which would probably be like 'something the size of an entire, decently-sized asteroid' in the case of a space-to-ground laser. The atmosphere is much thicker than you'd think for these purposes.

It's a nice bond villain superweapon but if you're going to put a weapon in orbit, the more realistic options are some kind of kinetic energy weapon or a more conventional missile, that just starts in space instead of on the ground.

The US military have been trying to implement laser weapons, and they've been useful enough to put on ships to an experimental degree even today. Then again, you need the support infrastructure of an entire warship to support the laser beam. It's an easy assumption to make that maybe some people (like the jews, reptoids, w/e, etc) are dicking around with lasers way better than are publicly known and available, but in my opinion it's easier to believe that California is just getting what it deserves after incompetency.

if anybody has a giant space laser or some other form of undetectable fire starter, I think they'd be using it a lot more often.

I haven't seen anything about a specifically religious library being destroyed, although there have been schools, churches, and libraries that went up in smoke. Maybe one of them had an archive?
They were specifically whining about how they hadn't digitized so much their collection

There was also one user whining about how one of the works destroyed had actually been digitized on Internet Archive but then they lost the suit

It's crazy how God, or whichever culturally enriched POC playing with fire just said "fuck this neighborhood in particular". How the fuck was it allowed to get this out of control? Guess something happened after all.

- LAFD is actually probably the 2nd or 3rd most highly regarded and competent fire department in the world behind New York and possibly Chicago depending who you ask.
They way I was always taught it. FDNY are the Best Traditional Firefighters. They have earned their name the Bravest over centuries. They do the really really Crazy stuff. But they are very old school. LAFD was always the top innovator. They are North AMerica and the Worlds Crazy Firefighting Research Division. They are the ones that test and experiment with new approaches. That then gets rolled out country wide. These two approaches more or less meet in the middle with Chicago.
- despite all the talk of DEI in this thread, firefighting remains dominated by white males. They have been pushing DEI (affirmative action) in the fire service since at least the early 90s. (Think American History X), but blacks in general don't want to join for whatever reason (probably swim test)
We're talking Los Angeles. I'm sure half the department is some flavor of Latino. The problem isn't with recruiting Blacks. The black men who can pass the tests are superb. It's the Math that is needed that really tends to derail the inner city black kids. People don't grasp how much math is needed. But all of those are examples of Natural Diversity. With core competency still being the primary goal. But as soon as you see the banners shouting "Firstest Trans Lesbian Fire Chief of Color Evar" Your entire organization is Fucked. Within weeks or months your organization will quickkly become unfit for purpose. Just like the New Zealand Navy.
- I can guarantee most of the firefighters are legit bad asses who are great at their job and live for this shit, but there is very little to be done in such dry and windy conditions. Their priority is to save lives and then if possible save/protect property.
A fully fueled brush fore in 90 mph winds. The only thing the firefighters can do is to endeavor to be upwind of it. Because you anin't putting that thing out short of an act of god.
The next week will be very interesting with no rain in the forecast and high winds, there is potential for this to get much, much worse, especially with the threat of arson.
Friday and Saturday will be the real tests. The wind is supposed to pick up. Still no rain.
- The scale of this firefighting operation is enormous and possibly unprecedented for urban firefighting with 1500+ personnel operating in a fairly small area.
If they have not done this already they need to activate the National Guard and any Military Reservist Firefighting companies. Ideally Air Force and Navy Fire Company's with the Air Crash Trucks. While Not fast, they have huge tanks, huge monitor nozzles designed to drive straight at the fire and knock it down. While not much use up in the hills they could be easily used to knock down the fire lines and lay a barrier of retardant in the neighborhoods. Just my thoughts on Problem solving.

And for Palisades, there is always this option

I love you.

More to to point, you need to ensure that the Russians, Chinese, Iranians, and Bob the cleaner from the ESA aren't going to point out this maneuverable nuclear power station orbiting the planet.

I have a doubt.

Well now there  are no residents. Can't exactly live in a burnt-out husk lol

Oh yeah, been wondering what the rebuilding process will look like. Like are they just gonna build new zillion-dollar mansions on top of the rubble, or are the anti-driving environmentalist globohomos gonna use the whole lot as the perfect testing ground to build kosher pod apartments or whatever shit?

Trying to come up with precedents in recent history, but most of the ones that come to mind immediately (Fukushima, Mt. St. Helen's, Katrina, Helene) weren't really as affluent as PP to begin with
A lot of the property was essentially grandfathered in before current permit and zoning laws. I’m certain a great deal of property will be left undeveloped due to environmental concerns.

huge ass magnifying glass in space.
Actually they talk about LASERS of exceptionally high wattage, like the ones we KNOW the navy has, but thrown onto a satellite. I don't even know why the idea is so insane to people, its entirely possible from off the shelf parts, as far as satellite stuff goes. Only potential issue is getting the "focus point" to be the right distance the ground roughly, but beyond that its just aiming a laser....just from space. Not hard.

Reminds me of an exchange I had with my grandmother after the Helene disaster happened:

I told her I was frustrated that the US government cares more about Ukraine than its own citizens in NC. She told me some celebrity was donating money and that the US government was sending each person in NC a small amount of money. She also laughed at me and said in an almost singsong voice that she "doesn't know what I'm looking at but it must be the wrong things!"

Should note she watches MSNBC all day. She was also raised in NYC and thinks she is a Ukrainian despite having one Ukrainian grandparent she never met who died long before she was born.
What is it with Ukraine and shitlibs and MSNBC and trying to impeach Trump and the treasonous Vindman brothers and owning California's water rights.

Look up attenuation you fucking retard.

For those are wondering why the state keeps voting the way that it does, the Greater Los Angeles Area has a population of ~18 million and the SF Bay area has ~17 million, not counting illegals. The entire rest of the state has about 4 million people. It's all because those highly condensed areas are not only full of dead-serious blue voters that actually think this was due to climate change and the answer to homelessness is 'just make more shitty houses'. Everywhere else gets no representation, however a lot of counties pretty much stopped giving a fuck about what the state says because they know that no one is steering the ship.

Many areas of the state aren't anything like the (now literal) hellhole. Here's a good representation that you can digest:

So I live very near the region that got hit by the hurricane. It’s like 4 months later and people are still in tents, and going into debt day by day for propane to heat what ever shanty they have. People who are in hotels are being kicked out by tomorrow morning (as if writing this) as the vouchers are running out. They’re in the middle of a cold snap, people WILL freeze to death.

Biden not only promised the feds will pay for all rebuilding efforts in California for 6 months, they sent another $500 million to Ukraine.

Fuck ALL those people.

They were GLEEFUL watching everything people owned being washed away and dozens of deaths and injuries bc of who the **region** voted for- not each victim, just the fact the region is red was enough for them to jump and clap like chimps. We’ve constantly eaten the shit they’ve voted for, the can live in their own shit holes for a while. I’m sorry for the pain, injuries and death but what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. I’ll do the good southern thing and donate what I can when I can but I won’t weep for the people who would happily clap as my entire family drowned in a mudslide bc someone MIGHT have voted for Trump.

Edit: just to be clear I’m not cheering on the deaths and destruction, I’m bitter about the differences in how the big cities are treated to how we’re being treated. Appalachia has done a lot for our country and we’re constantly shit on and forgotten. So I don’t encourage violence or withholding supplies, but I’m not gonna shed a tear and tear my hair out in grief.

I live near the region as well. I posted awhile back that I had to help family who impacted by the hurricane, by myself (I'm a young woman), weaving through fallen trees, where I saw the entirety of the river was gone...now it runs through what was Chimney Rock. Several bridges exist without purpose now. My family was lucky. I saw massive military helicopters aiding their less fortunate neighbors, my family has their farmhouse on top of a hill. I used Starlink to get them connected to the net. I saw parades of trucks coming into the effected area while I was making my way back, heading east. I lived in Asheville. I saw the places I loved while I lived in Asheville underwater on the internet.

I honestly just want to cry.

Over the past few weeks I've been mulling over this realization I had. Essentially, what will actually be forgotten is what people don't talk about people potentially forgetting. It makes complete sense, but considering how over the past decade we've been hearing how some various inferior cultures may be forgotten, it's easy to just take their word for it. But the thing that has been disappearing is Southern culture.

There needs to be a Southern revival. We need a lot more political power, all our efforts should be on trying to conserve our culture and way of life. No more pandering to Yanks. Like how Southerners pissed off the government for being more efficient and quicker than them in saving people after Helene, we need to become even more self sufficient. We shouldn't just be passive after we're forgotten for the umpteenth time. We should demand respect from the rest of the country.
