Yeah but I'm sure that would be a huge treaty/airspace violation, and sending anything to space is a big todo. There is an entire agency that does nothing but track satellites. Look, if you absolutely insist, I can spend a couple hours and we can walk through the calculations and see if I have to eat crow, but the long and short of it is that the heat problem alone fucks modern space-borne lasers up. If it's useful enough to penetrate the atmosphere and set fires on the ground, and it's small and undetectable enough that nobody can do anything about it, that shit was not made by human hands. I won't discount the possibility of that existing, but if it does, it was made by Reptoids, not yankees, chinks, slavs or jews, or any other form of life from earth. Anything human beings could make in the modern era and launch up would either be one of the largest objects ever put into orbit, or melt after one shot. (and by 'melt', it would be more like 'explode')

It would legitimately be easier to put a miles-long stretch of aluminum foil up there to act as a magnifying glass, but then everybody would see that anyway.

Lasers generate heat at a point with a diameter less than the thickness of a human hair. There's no way to find that point after a burn out. However, if the fire were to be stopped before the building burnt down and the laser was shooting through a translucent but not completely transparent surface(most windows), you would be able to track the location of the shooter.

The laser would burn a distinct visible perfectly straight occlusion through the translucent layer. You would just need to follow the direction of the occlusion in reverse to get your shooter.

This technique is actually used to determine if a laser is leveled correctly. A beam is shot through a pane of plexiglass. If the occlusion in the pane is straight perpendicular to the cutting surface, the laser head is parallel to the cutting bed.

the problem is cost. like others have said, it would be way cheaper to just tell homeless people to start fires. the lasers you're talking about cost $100 million minimum to set up not including launch costs and there's no way in hell to hide a satellite from all our sensors.

like it would literally be easier to just buy thermite or get old cell phone batteries or rent an EV or a fuckload of other ways that would be cheaper and less obvious than something any observatory could catch. It would be like trying to rape a child by running around naked during a football game. For those are wondering why the state keeps voting the way that it does, the Greater Los Angeles Area has a population of ~18 million and the SF Bay area has ~17 million, not counting illegals. The entire rest of the state has about 4 million people. It's all because those highly condensed areas are not only full of dead-serious blue voters that actually think this was due to climate change and the answer to homelessness is 'just make more shitty houses'. Everywhere else gets no representation, however a lot of counties pretty much stopped giving a fuck about what the state says because they know that no one is steering the ship.

I have a doubt.

You would need a massive amount of energy for a giant jew space laser, since atmospheric diffraction, among other long range optical issues such as heat waves, makes collimating a laser to a point intense enough to start a fire at such a long range insanely difficult. Instead you would have to rely on raw energy output, which would basically mean a giant orbital nuclear power plant.
