To reel back this discussion back into productive territory - there are two groups of people holding wildly opposite opinions of Grumzz, with both being more or less wrong about it.
First group dickrides him as some kind of savior of gaming, despite his contributions to gaming industry during the past 20 years primarily being two big game projects failures, and shitposts on Twitter.
Second group ignores or outright obfuscates his genuine accomplishments, early on his career, to paint him as pure grifter who can be directly compared to Zoe Quinn or Anita Sarkeesian to "own the chuds."
What's the sensible middle ground? Probably to not give him a dime unless he's somehow offering a finished product that other people can vouch for. Presumably, to treat what he puts out on the internet, like it was by any other random guy.

Grummz is held up only because his status as a former Blizzard hotshot brings "legitimacy" to the grift-o-sphere that wants to leech from that. That's why he keeps getting invited to shows (Note that other game devs that are somewhat sympathetic to the cause never debase themselves enough to do the same).
All his fuckups will be tossed aside or ignored. But not forever. I've already seen some people in "our" camp openly mocking him.
He's also a big lighting rod for the woke crazies, that is his only practical use.
I dislike him, but from where I see it, he's still a piece on the board.

Square Enix is essentially just a Western company now.
The recent Final Fantasy games don't even feel like JRPGs, they feel like Ubisoft or EA games.
Rebirth even has Ubisoft towers you have to climb to reveal the map.

ff16 is just a moviegame too and theres zero enemy variety. the combat feels nice but when you are fighting thr same exact enemies for 50 hours its boring as sin.

It was both.
Company's adopted this because they thought it would make them money. Look at how Facebook turned the instant the US election was confirmed. They thought they could survive on free ESG money. Either way, they profited. Now without the free money, we're seeing the split between true believers and those that just wanted the money.
Judge him on what he says and does. His games success (or lack thereof) don't really matter. What matters is he is/was an industry insider during a golden age.
In a way, he's like Asmongold. The fact he can deliver wins is what makes lefties angry at him. And they can scream "firefall!" and "no game in 20 years!", but it doesn't matter to his commentary on DEI the same way screaming "cockroach! blood wall!" does nothing to prove Asmongold wrong when he talks about it.

I don’t know how many of you are corpos, not many looking how people react, but ESG isn’t the insane thing the bearded YouTubers sorry about.
What happens is companies took it too far. Don’t pour chemical waste into rivers, don’t constantly end up in discrimination lawsuits, and run your company well is essentially what ESG is.
What happened was there was a weird way of thinking that took over corporations. Suddenly people thought that having a bunch of skin tones and people with their hair dyed weird colours would make them money. Seriously. It’s that fucking dumb.
That’s when the most bitter and talentless people were somehow brought in as consultants, took over HR, then they started to get put into leadership positions because the plan was essentially:
1. Hire ethnics and gender specials
2. ???
3. Profit!
It was a delusion that took over boardrooms. It also helps that this made soulless C-suite types feel good so they could tell their friends at dinner parties about what good they were doing for the world.
This was always a LARP and it was never going to survive the money drying up. Covid, with the money machines going brrrrrrr, probably made it last a few years longer, but Trump is hopefully finally killing it now the Democrats are gone and we can all finally just get back to doing business and making money.

Considering there is literal decades of better games out there to play instead and nearly unlimited fan-made games and mods, how is this working out for them? All this did was kill console and AAA gaming almost entirely, at least out in the West

20 years ago, and he's done nothing noteworthy since except scam people with a vaporware crowdfund and refuse to let GamerGate die.
If he created Diablo or WoW I'd maybe put more stake in his opinions (the way I do with someone like John Romero despite his depressing post-Quake track record,) but he was just one among hundreds of other employees on those games. He's closer to Keiji Inafune than Koji Igarashi.
I'd be willing to listen to his thoughts on writing or managing an MMO (although the latter are probably severely out-dated), but for everything else I agree with @Overpriced Gaming Chair : he's just another random guy on the Internet with opinions. More informed than the average DEI opponent, perhaps, but nothing special; certainly not deserving of the embarrassing adoration his simps heap upon him.

Now it's applicable to about 99% of everyone online.
These people are willing to overlook actual abuse, harassment, and threats, only to then laugh about it in their discord hideaways and bluesky echo chambers. Their inability to let other people even speak without flipping out is a typical Cluster-B reaction that should always be expected.
People have started calling it toxic positivity but it's never been that, it's a Machiavellian powerplay and the unwillingness to hit them as hard as they hit others is why they still have any social influence at all. The only thing these types fear is a backbone, that's why they always wither away when faced with anyone with even a whisper of one. Grummz and his give no fucks attitude drives them so crazy, worse yet he has a following and credentials, they can't bleed him dry by a thousand cuts.

I did. there were some nice idea in there (which ironically have since been picked up in some form or another by other games), it just was just mismanaged and they couldn't figure out what the game wanted to be and where to go.

The epicenter of GG was 8chan, for better or for worse, and believe me many posters there were both coomers and lolicons. Seeing the husk that is Acid's site today just makes it more obvious, hell just look at him. The more mainstream exposure, your content creators or your reddit, even 4chan threads? Much of what was done, or rather what the movement tried to accomplish, trickled down from 8chan. Not everything related to GG came from 8chan of course, the whole thing was unorganized and a mess, but after a while, everyone lost sight of what they were doing and the idiots were given media attention. Anyways, as far as degenerates go, those idiots that were given media attention? That doesn't change the fact that they were "part of the movement", and without central authority figures to disavow them or correct the record, degenerates did as they do-take over and make everything about themselves and their fetishes, ruining the public image as they went along. You're right in that by 2016 most people didn't care about GG anymore but my god, that didn't change the fact that many of the hanger-ons were the worst the movement had to offer. It also doesn't change the fact that good PR matters, and as much as people want to claim the gaming media are liars and fake news, they did expose the worst elements of the GG movement...because it let them. As someone who was there, believe me some of the most retarded takes and posts I have ever seen came from pro-GG side and pro-GG people. They're capable of being dumbasses just as anyone else, perhaps even more so since they think they're "based" and therefore always right. One of their dumbest moments? Forever associating Vivian James, mascot for the Gamergate movement and /v/ board on 8chan, with fetish porn to fuel this stupid narrative you're talking about. Much of the fanart made of her to this day is coomer art, usually straight up porn, what more can be said?
