Driving with a half full tank of gas is actually standard practice for most people especially ones that primarily drive in the city. A pint weighs a pound, a gallon weighs 8 lbs, so if you're filling your tank up all the way it's like you're driving around with a sandbag or two of dead weight in the trunk which takes energy to haul around.

It won't make you faster but it will save you a little gas.

Running under a half tank means the pump is not submerged which can lead to wear/rust.

Also it has to work harder to pump fuel so it increases burn out. Always keep your fuel topped off. This also helps if you run into an emergency such as a natural disaster where you need to get out and fuel may not be available such as after Hurricane Milton.

Only poors keep their tank at under half. Bite the bullet and fill it up.

First, even if this was the case, it would only affect cars with fuel pumps mounted to the top of the tank.

Second, most fuel pumps I've seen have been made of stuff that doesn't rust.

Third, if there's fuel being pumped through the pump, it's getting lubricated with fuel, making the wear comment bullshit.

I've yet to see a fuel pump dead because the fuel tank was kept half full.

Your other comments about it being a good idea to have fuel on hand - sure, I think it's probably a good idea to have a semi permanent rotating store of fuel in your garage that you stock up on when gas prices dip. But my experience with fuel pumps doesn't confirm the "you'll wear your pump out" fuddlore.
