Business Starbucks reverses its open-door policy, requiring people to make a purchase if they want to stay - Hobos in shambles

Starbucks is reversing its open-door policy after almost seven years, now requiring that people make a purchase if they want to hang out at its coffee shops or use its restrooms.

The coffee giant said on Monday that a new code of conduct – which will be posted in all company-owned North American stores – will also ban discrimination or harassment, consumption of outside alcohol, smoking, vaping, drug use and panhandling.

The new rules reverse an open-door policy put in place in 2018, after two Black men were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks where they had gone for a business meeting. The incident at that individual store, which had a policy of asking non-paying customers to leave, was caught on video and was a major embarrassment for the company.

The change also comes under the new leadership of Brian Niccol, who was hired from Chipotle last year to revitalize the struggling coffee chain. Niccol has vowed to make Starbucks' locations "inviting places to linger," with the goal of reestablishing the chain as the nation's "community coffeehouse."

Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson said the new rules are designed to help prioritize paying customers. Anderson said most other retailers already have similar rules.

"We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable in our stores," Anderson said. "By setting clear expectations for behavior and use of our spaces, we can create a better environment for everyone."

According to a company statement emailed to CBS News, the coffee chain understands that visitors might need to use the restroom or log into Wi-Fi before making a purchase at the counter. The goal of the new rules is to make its locations more appealing by prioritizing customers, Starbucks said.

Stores may call law enforcement

The code of conduct warns that violators will be asked to leave, and says the store may call law enforcement, if necessary. Starbucks said employees would receive training on enforcing the new policy.

At the time of the 2018 incident, Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz said he didn't want people to feel "less than" if they were refused access.

"We don't want to become a public bathroom, but we're going to make the right decision a hundred percent of the time and give people the key," Schultz said.

Since then, though, employees and customers have struggled with unruly and even dangerous behavior in stores. In 2022, Starbucks closed 16 stores around the country — including six in Los Angeles and six in its hometown of Seattle — for repeated safety issues, including drug use and other disruptive behaviors that threatened staff.

Since the pandemic shuttered the economy in early 2020, mental health issues as well as misuse of drugs have increased, as well as homelessness.

You mean this isn't the norm???

Yeah, prioritize your paying customers and don't let bums shoot up in the bathroom, formerly known as running a business.

I remember reading about this incident, yeah it was a bit shitty what happened to them, but why is that justification to allow randos to clog up your service?

Bad idea. I mean, not in isolation. But if your main customer base is balls deep in woke nonsense, going hardcore on some dumb woke policy and then reneging... it'll totally fuck you over.

Idk maybe they have a decent customer base in middle aged suburban moms to hold them over?

This isn't going to be enforcable lmao. Banning people from pissing or being inside without paying for shit at the overpriced coffee equivalent of a fast food place won't dissuade the hobos and junkies. You already let them in via a policy you didn't need they're never gonna leave now.

It's incredible that this shit lasted this long. The only reason I think it wasn't scrapped way earlier was because of COVID and good ol' fentanyl Floyd, because they first started doing this shit after trespassing some dude who killed around in one of their stores all day.
It really killed business for them, the hipsters who worked remotely from Starbucks are long gone now, only to be replaced by an endless string of junkies.
I've heard some stories from Starbucks workers about cleaning the bathrooms after this change - needles, shit on walls, and even a few about homeless fuckers sleeping in the bathrooms.

Why didn't these niggers buy a coffee?

Cool. How you planning to enforce it?

You just lock the bathroom and put a sign on the door that says that patrons need to ask for a key. Lots of businesses have this. Several businesses I have manged used this system and it worked out fine. You would occasionally get people who would try to use the bathroom without purchasing something and they would either just leave or buy something small. And with the sign posted, and the door locked, you can have employees not have to worry about a drug addict overdosing in your bathroom or locking themselves in for hours and needing to call police. Or now some transgender weirdo following a woman into the bathroom to harass or assault her.

This system is perfect for small cafes or gas stations or fast food and takeout restaurants. Just having a lock and key can really prevent some serious misuse of your facilities. And protect your employees and patrons as well.
Always seemed incredibly rude to me to sit in a pub or a café for hours without buying anything, even just a token drink every hour or so that you nurse as slowly as possible. You're paying for the space, not necessarily for the drinks.
This is something you deal with in the restaurant business. Where people will overstay socializing at a table without purchasing more drinks or desert. They eat their meal and have an empty table and sit there for another hour or two on their phones or waiting until the movie or sports event or theater play they are going to go to next will start. They don't want to get to their next social event early so they just sit at the table for an extra hour or two. It's okay to overstay a little while after you've eaten your meal, you are a paying customer, but two additional hours during peak meal times is absurd.

Lots of people who sit down at a coffee shop, without ordering anything, are thieves looking to steal a phone or laptop as well.

It seems like yesterday both academia and the media were worshiping Starbucks for being such a brave and stunning "third place," to use urbanist lingo -- that is, somewhere that isn't work or home.

Turns out, a business needs to make a profit. How the turntables.

Starbucks already had burned shitty overpriced coffee and trash “food” with so many better options. Most people don’t notice because their drinks are full of syrup and sugar and dairy slop. But if you drink their shit black , it’s terrible.

Add the ambience of a piss soaked shooting gallery or a homeless shelter to that. That’ll be $10.75, sir!

I go to some leftshit co-op with a thermos and get a refill of organic fair trade nonsense for $0.99 now. It’s all white people and they’re all “co op members” and it’s glorious. The lifetime admission fee was $10 and no niggers, well they hang around outside because they know there’s whiteys with money to beg from. Fuckers.
