Here's how you get rich by filing bankruptcy. Let's say there's a small retail chain in the state with five locations. They all own their own property, but they're losing money and struggling. I happen to own a real estate company. I buy the retail chain for a song & a dance. I then have the retail chain sell the land to my real estate company for dirt cheap. Then I have my retail company lease the land back from my real estate company at a hilariously exorbitant rate. Once I have sucked as much cash out of the retail company as I can, I have it start taking out loans against its remaining assets to keep paying my real estate company. Finally, once the retail chain is unable to service its loan, I have it declare bankruptcy.

If I played my cards right, the lease I paid myself and the value of the land I sold myself greatly outweigh the price I paid for the retail chain and the small cash infusion I made into it to sell myself the land. Thus I have enriched myself by bankrupting the retail chain (and firing all the workers, sorry guys).

This how PE firms operate. It's an exaggeration to say rich people file five bankruptcies a year, but purchasing a company solely to rotate its assets into a different company you own and set the carcass on fire is absolutely something they do.

I'm not even that big of a religious fellow and honestly smaller churches are the most reliable way to get shit to your local communities and they always need something whether it's physical goods like food and clothes and whatnot or funds to do events for it. Avoid big ritzy temples of mammon style mega churches though. As far as greater sum/scope charity I got no clue there - It feels like they all turn out rotten.
