Two 8-month-old pit bulls that were loose in Nanaimo attacked several children, severely injuring at least one. Other people that came to aid the children were also injured.

The children were playing in a yard at the house of one of their friends. The dogs were from somewhere else in the neighborhood and had been cited for being at large previously.

One of the owners of the dogs came and got the dogs but did not stick around. The news interviewed the other owner, a Dangerhair that looked to be in her late 40s or early 50s. While she was devastated at what her dogs had done, she said to the reporter, "People are saying, look at this from the prospective of a parent, well, these dogs are my kids, too," and then she broke down crying.

It was later reported both dogs were euthanized, as there have been other incidents prior to this one, and due to the severity of the injuries the one particular child sustained.

To the dangerhair dog owner I would have to say, "If these dogs were your KIDS, you did a lousy job of raising them. Thank heavens you didn't spawn any of your own."

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood provided new details about the dog attack that left an 8-year-old boy dead during a briefing on Tuesday.

According to Sheriff Chitwood, the boy, identified as Michael, was riding bikes with his friends in the neighborhood when they stopped at the mailboxes near front entrance of the subdivision to pet the loose dogs.

It was at that moment that Michael was "brutally mauled and killed," Chitwood said. The sheriff noted there was no indication the dogs were going to attack.

"And then, like a light switch went off, then they went right into attack mode," Chitwood said.

Authorities said the child's mother jumped on top of her son to shield him from the attack.

"I can tell you, in all my years of policing, to listen to that 911 call and hear Michael's mother in the background when she dove on top of him to stop the attack, screaming, ‘somebody help me! He's not breathing,' it strikes to the core of who we are as human beings," Chitwood explained.

Michael sustained 12 bite wounds and suffered a broken neck and leg, with Chitwood describing his injuries as "horrific."

"He never had a chance," Chitwood said.

What we know: The attack occurred just before 5 p.m. Monday evening in a neighborhood north of DeLand, near Arabesque Drive and Airport Road, according to deputies. Witnesses called 911 and performed CPR on the child, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Deputies and Volusia County Animal Services responded, capturing two dogs involved in the attack. Officials described one as a pit bull and the other as a mixed breed. Both animals have been confiscated and placed in quarantine.

Who owns the dogs?

Authorities identified the owner of the dogs as 31-year-old Amanda Bailey Franco. She has an extensive criminal history, primarily related to drugs, according to the sheriff.

What's next: The two dogs have been captured. A joint investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

"We're now awaiting the owner's response about whether to sign the dogs over or whether we have to go to court and fight over how we're going to proceed with this. So it's the beginning stages of an investigation," the sheriff said.

Chitwood emphasized that Franco would be held accountable.

"We are going to do everything humanly possible to hold the owner of these dogs responsible," Chitwood said. "And we're going to do everything possible to make sure that these animals are destroyed."
Did the dogs have a history of violence?

Law enforcement officers who went door-to-door after the incident heard "horrific stories" from neighbors about how the dogs are frequently at large and have destroyed chickens.

Officials also discovered that the dogs may have been involved in a previous incident in another county.

Chitwood stated that the sheriff’s office is following up on that report.

We had dogs when I was growing up. They didn't have to be locked up when we were at school/work. They would just chill in the house until we got home. Occasionally got into the trash or something.

I miss normal dogs that you didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for.

I know it’s expensive, but invest in a cute little corgi or a labradoodle or whatever. You won’t regret it. In the end, over the lifespan of the dog, it will be a trivial expense.

Plus you’ll save $$$ on the medic bills/plastic surgery to repair mauling scars on your children, the lawsuits from your neighbors, and the eventual behavioral euthanasia bill. Woohoo!

Most are not trained. And if your so anxious you cannot go out in public without your mutt then don't go out in public with it. IMO most dogs go through a destructive phase as puppies and then tend to grow out of it. (Eg chewing shoes to bits is common, cause they smell of the owner and chew like a toy.) pit bulls carry on destroying your shit well into adulthood and can’t be trusted to grow out of it because chewing send them into this weird fugue state. I remember watching a small black PBT I was caring for chew a Nylabone until his gums were bleeding from the shaved plastic bits and he just kept chugging. I took the toy away cause he was hurting himself and didn’t seem to care.
