Business Big Tech Layoffs Megathread - Techbros... we got too cocky...

Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

Welcome to the first stage of the ruse.

1. Say you want more indians
2. Public backlash <---- you are here
3. Agree to not want more Indians
4. compromise by keeping Indians in India
5. Send all WFH jobs to India.

As has been mentioned in this thread, in the 90s in the UK, all of the UK-based call centres shipped their work to India. They never came back.

Congratulations, WFH-ers, you played yourself.
The only winning move was to hate pajeets from the start.

I don't understand why he's asking for this, when he's all for H-1B.
Are you shitting me? He just flashed the jeet bat signal. Now hundreds of them are going to flood Xitters email with their diploma mill degrees and stolen code.

H1B slave drivers don’t usually openly advertise. Instead they post job listings in America with lowball pay and they do some show interviews. Then they say “woe is me, I can’t find an American that will code for $30k a year in a big city because Americans are lazy! Nobody wants to work anymore!”. And then they start their h1b paperwork.

BioWare Studio Update
by Author -BioWare - Posted onJanuary 29, 2025
Hello Everyone,

Today, we are turning towards the future and preparing for the next chapter in BioWare’s story. As we announced in August 2023, we are changing how we build games to meet the needs of our upcoming projects and hold ourselves to the highest quality standards.

Now that Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been released, a core team at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others.

In keeping with our fierce commitment to innovating during the development and delivery of Mass Effect, we have challenged ourselves to think deeply about delivering the best experience to our fans. We are taking this opportunity between full development cycles to reimagine how we work at BioWare.

Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio. We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and so we have worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit.

Today’s news will see BioWare become a more agile, focused studio that produces unforgettable RPGs. We appreciate your support as we build a new future for BioWare.

It's the Times of India reporting this, so you've got to wonder what the demographics of the firings are. Would those terminations make pajeets happy by making room for their lower-cost "expertise?"
I'm more inclined to believe that they're cutting H1B dead weight in advance of any potential changes to the program rules or oversights. If they're facing down the risk of H1B's having much higher salary requirements or other such things, better cut the people not worth that much now, and move in advance to be in compliance. Not like there's any shortage of unemployed domestic coders right now among the gaming and startup crashes.

"Oh so you want me back in the cagie? tough cookie, I'll take the salary cut."
And its a damned worthwhile trade. Sure, I could be making even more money, but past a point its really just numbers on the screen, whereas only wfh lets you fit in a few sets of an exercise regime while listening to retarded pajeets on a call fail to understand how servers work. Helps keep me from saying very mean things as well.

Huh interesting, I missed this news yesterday. Things must be really fucking dire because back when Giant Bomb was still a relevant thing Dave Lang (Iron Galaxy founder) was always appearing on their live streams talking about how the entire reason he founded his own studio is so he could try and avoid the whole meat grinder aspect of the games industry. I don't think they've ever done layoffs before.

It is actually legit impressive how they made it this far considering they've never at any point had a successful video game of their own. They basically focused on port work while on the side doing a little original game which would come along and flop. Only exception, sort of, being the Killer Instinct reboot that they inherited after Amazon bought Double Helix. They basically repeated this process for a decade, but I guess with the North American AAA industry in shambles right now it's harder for them to find any work.

Clearly they did him dirty. Sucks for the guy.

But still, what the fuck is the deal with these kind of long-ass interview stages? HR truly is the enemy.
I thought these long convoluted recruitment processes died in the early 2000s?

Pro-tip: if you get asked to jump through that many hoops to get a job then say no. This is an employer that doesn’t value your time. It’s a massive red flag.

Yea but the thing is, zoomer devs don't mind going through this gauntlet of interviews to get the job. Sr/Lead folks with more years under their belt like myself really prefer one interview with a tech guy where they talk shop, then probe the candidate for questions on his previous work. More often than not, you can sniff out fake dudes from the guys who know their shit, 15 minutes into the call.

But sometimes you just can't win... HR "prefers" this hiring method.
