Good thing I never planned on getting this title anyway. Played a bit of the first game while it was on Game Pass, and I was so bored through the first slogging bit of it, I legit fell asleep.

My previous comment, while coming from a vast and discerning mind, full of truth, was brief and vulgar.

My suspicion of the game honestly began soon after announcement where they said it was going to be "darker" and "grittier". I didn't like KCD because it was a hard boiled dark exploration of Medieval society. Fellow map game autists might sympathize with me as I felt the same tonal shift between Crusader Kings 2 and 3. It went from a vaudeville, romantic depiction of European medieval life to something more like Game of Thrones or a modern period piece. It was light, cozy, culturally grounded and because, not despite, it was fantastical. KCD was good because it was about playing dice in taverns, going to the baths before meeting with a noble, banners, tournaments, monastery-whodunnits, trysts with ladies above your station, alchemy, learning latin and the fantasy of a young man making his way in the world despite tragedy by the skill of his hands and mind.

And exoticsm/orientalism is an inherent part of Romanticism! The idea of meeting strange people from strange places is cool considering it's the sequel that places village boy Henry into a larger world. Imagine how interesting it would be for Henry to have to talk to a Finnish trader who is barely Christian and speaks a language nobody really knows? Or a Italian mercenary in full garb as a retinue of a cardinal? Hell make them a different race, there's a thematic reason why one of the three kings in Christian art is depicted as black. You could meet one of the last Christian mongols, stuck in a strange place.

Ivanhoe, the archetype of romantic medieval fiction even had Jews and muslims as major parts of it. Have the infirmary split between a catholic monk and Arab doctor. A lot of what we know about vikings and slavs from early medieval times comes from Arab traders, slavers and travelers in southern Russia. Up jumped black Smith son now a knight, Henry, could be asked to resolve a dispute between the two about what ancient philosopher was greater, Aristotle or Plato? It would be room for levity and explains more about the world KCD was made to express.

I have no dog in this fight since the first game never really gave me that much curiosity. Autistic games where you suck ass at something till you train it by doing it 100 times never really tickled my interest much. But I get the impression this is similar to the Stellar Blade spergout when it released with some censored costumes. It turned what was seens as a "supreme victory" into a pyrrhic one because suddenly what was supposed to be a clean win was now marred by the based product suddenly doing some last minute concessions.
