Koei-Tecmo's Warriors Series - DON'T PURSUE LU BU

In an interview, DWO Producer Tomohiko Sho said that a Dynasty Warriors 10 game was either cancelled or halted in favor of Origins. It's yet to be seen if there will be another numbered DW game with the large roster of playable officers and weapons, but if DWO is a financial success with both the base game and the inevitable DLCs, future DW games will probably go the smaller route like DWO did.

Also, how well did Samurai Warriors 5 did financially, since the game has a smaller roster than the past games, and the story line was narrowed down to only focus on Nobunaga Oda and Mitsuhide Akechi?

A patch will be launching for DWO on next week Monday, which includes some QoL features such as horse call adjuster and camera speed options:

Guan Yu also has that We Wuz voice in DWO too for some reason:

And while most of the voices are better than DW9, someone of them managed to be even worse. Some voice lines in DWO also have unnatural pauses to match up with the lip syncing, which was also an issue in DW9.

Also, Soynys get the short end of the stick now if they want to use Chinese audio, since the Chinese dub is not included with the English version of DWO on PS5, while it is available on English versions on XBox and PC.

DWO has reached a peak of almost 70k players on Steam:

Ratings have also been extremely positive for the game so far:

I'm sad as fuck that the only casualty from the original voice actors strike was the fucking dub of Dynasty Warriors.
Ignore their politics for aside for the moment (every voice actor is retarded so I know it's hard) but by the time they got to DW 7/8 99% of the cast fucking nailed it and while I think some of the new cast could improve over time I can't help but lament what was lost.

Pretty crazy how nomires and review have taken a liking to the game. i wonder whats the drawn.

It seems to be a lot of reasons why DWO drawn bigger audiences outside of just the niche Musou game players:
  • The demo featuring the Lu Bu fight with Souls-like focus on dodges and parries, as well as the higher difficulty compared to the facerolling parts of past DW games, appeal to fans of those games, gamers in general, and journalists.
  • Famous YouTubers and Streamers, i.e. Dunkey, have played the game and made content out of it, and they usually liked the game, and also provided exposure for the games to the larger audiences.
  • The cheesy romance segments featuring the male PC with the officers appeals to the female romance fans.
  • The design of the male PC himself also appeals to both males and females that are fans of the "twink boy" like characters.
  • The game taking advantage of newer hardware, and can render the large crowds of enemies to slaughter, as well the game's PC port being much better compared to past Musou games, attracted lots of people.
  • Fans of DW games wanted something good to play, after the disastrous DW9, and it nails it for the most part.
  • PS5 lacking in games to play attracted Sony fans to play the game, even though it is also available on XBox and PC, and DW games were always mostly on PlayStation.
There's a few groups of people that DWO doesn't appeal to, i.e. players that want to customize their character or play as a female one, and the players that liked the old Musou games with lots of playable officers and weapons to use, but KT will probably appeal to those groups later, either as DLCs for DWO, or a new game.

Also, KT has been cheapening out on voice acting work, so that means that the DW7 and 8 voice cast will most likely never return. They were already cheapening out on voiceover work starting in DW8, since the Ambition Mode segments, the story narrator (I think), and the pre-open the gate dialog were unvoiced in English. Also, the games having a small modding scene (the only notable mod is the ZMod for the Steam version of DW8 that adds higher resolution support and the option to remove the Weapon Affinity System, and KT's proprietary game engine for their games isn't mod-friendly), means that someone probably won't try to make AI dialog to fill in the unvoiced parts of DW8. The voices by Jamieson Price (Lu Bu), Terrence Stone (Zhao Yun), Tara Platt (Wang Yuanji), Michelle Specht (Wang Yi), and Cindy Robinson (Zhang Chunhua), to name a few, WERE those characters, and most likely will never be matched.

Dynasty Warriors Origin is a game that for a long time fan of the franchise you will either love it or you will simultaneous be both heartbroken and excited about it at the same time.

The more fantastical elements, over the top characters, and bright colors are swapped with a more detailed and down to earth story and characters.
Spending more time with the story and characters does allow you to connect with them on a deeper level so memorable quotes/colors/and outfits are less necessary so while things were lost new things have took their place.

The single playable character and lack of co-op I have less good things to say about, but as this is not a mainline game plus their obsession of making side games of everything I don't believe this will be permanent. Your character is a nobody and I believe if the very least you were given some customization the player would feel a deeper connection to them, but as of now they are just a pretty anime fuckboy.
The one benefit with one character is that they got time to give the player a lot more agency with moves and weapons so combat feels amazing.
Map design and the battlefield actually matter again so it's not slaughtering mindless mooks who can't do shit.

I ultimately think Origins is an amazing foundation for the new direction of the franchise as there are many things they can add and improve while the core aspect of itself is fine. I ultimately believe that when developers actually go out of their way to try something new while also putting a bunch of effort behind it they should be rewarded for it.

DWO has sold ~63k PS5 physical copies in Japan in it's first week, which is the 2nd highest in sales for that week, only behind the Donkey Kong Country Remake:

Compared that to past DW releases, the physical copy sales are a lot lower, but it doesn't say the whole story, because PS5 has been lacking overall in Japan as a whole, and the lack of games on it, and also because digital sales have increased since the times of the past DW games:

That's not to say that DWO is going to be a Dragon Age Veilguard situation where it had a larger peak count on Steam, but still didn't meet EA's sales expectations. It's also worth noting that DWO probably has a smaller budget cost compared to DAV, and stuff like DAV having a free trial on EA Play also inflated their numbers.

So, aside from this game, DW8 was the latest one that was actually playable?

And is the best version of that Empires or Xtreme or what?

I recommend Xtreme, but make sure you get the DYNASTY WARRIORS 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition so you get the base game and the expansion.
DW8 Empires is a downgrade from 7.

Also the Complete Edition on Steam is compatible with zmod that adds higher resolution and 120 FPS support, and even allows you disable the Weapon Affinity system completely. That mod doesn't work the Definitive Edition of DW8XL (which has most of the DLC content included, since you have to buy the DLCs separately for the Complete Edition, in typical KT fashion) that is sold on the Microsoft Store.

I got Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate for christmas from one of my friends and have been playing it ever since.
Since around the start of the year i've accumulated tens of hours in it.

I did play it when it was released back then and remember liking it quite a bit, but now I think I can appreciated it a bit more.
For one I think it got an absolutely killer soundtrack with good remixes of old songs, currently been listening to this one.

I'm just a sucker for these epic choirs, especially one minute in is my favourite part.

And since I got the Ultimate edition I get all sorts of costumes for all the characters, some are way better than the default costumes whilst others are just completely silly or awful looking.

What I appreciate most about the game is that it was actually decently difficult for a bit, I always play on hard at minimum and the first few missions I actually failed a few times.
I had to learn to actually clear out enemies as I race from ally to ally to save them, had to learn in what order to go to which part of the enemy and stuff, I just found that pretty enjoyable.

Now that I am at Chapter 4 though I have about 7 characters I regularly use and have thus figured out what their best attributes for weapons are.
My team is silly strong if I want it to be. If I want to absolutely obliterate all semblance of challenge I just pick-

Ma Chao - He has a very fun and versatile moveset and his Musou attack does cracked damage, he is also Speed type meaning he can easily keep the pressure on.

Gyuki- This big piece of shit of a pigman is very deceptive, even with 10 Agility you won't be able to do shit with him, he'll be torn apart on Chaos by arrows and basic mooks. What you wanna do with him is jump in the Air and throw his club, then on the way down you stomp the fuckers below.
All he needs is Osmosis and you can repeat this ad infinitum even against bosses.

Ginchiyo Tachibana - She has a very fast and strong moveset without any nonsense, ideal for taking out officers. Her ground special attack clears out rooms for little musou and her true musou does and absolutely disgusting amount of damage in a wide area. She is an absolute beast.

Other characters I like to use are Goemon, Ranmaru Mori, Cai Wenji, Zhang Liao, Guan Ping and Kaguya.

One big downside is that every single character starts out at level 1 with a level 1 weapon, meaning you have to invest quite a bit if you want to use them in a current level.
And you never stop getting new characters, even in Chapter 4...so unless you got the spare growth points and money you're not really gonna play around with your new guys since grinding them by actually playing as them is far too slow...

So what ended up happening with me is that I just used my core team to grind growth points to pump up a new guy I wanted to use...this just meant that my core team got stronger and stronger with yet better weapons and- yeah you can probably see the issue.

If you have been itching for a good Musou game, Orochi 3 Ultimate is one of the best of all of them easily, i've been playing the series since DW2.

I forget when he was added but I fell in love with that first moveset they had for him almost instantly due to that combo of speed and radius on those trident spins. No openings at all unless you were an idiot.
He is one of your first three characters in Orochi 3 and he has been in the series overall at least since 2.
But yeah he is very great to play as, him being Speed type allows for some nasty and fun combos.

I don't think he was playable in 2 but IIRC he was in 3 and boy was he neat. I know I tried a later game and his moveset had been replaced with something a lot less neat and he sucked.

No, he was in 2 actually.

What sets him apart from the other spear guys in the DW games is that he is arguably the best guy on a horse, in many games he has very good attacks on horseback.
I remember in 4 he has a very neat shockwave attack as his strong move that no one else has.

For whatever reason I don't remember him in 2, but I do remember that kickass helmet and armor on top of the neat moveset.

As to him being a badass on a horse, historically he was since Liang was part of the northern steppes, which also explains why he's got all that fur trim on his armor since shit's cold up there.
