@Looney Troons I can't reply directly to your post from about 2 pages ago, but besides the dedicated autism that comes with speedrunning you're right on the mark in that a lot of these 'professional' speedrunners are just plain rude or just anti-social assholes who gatekeep their bullshit so extensively it's a headache just putting up with it. Hey, all the more power to them if it means preventing fresh blood from getting into this dumb 'hobby.'
The surface-level aspect of speedrunning is also just incredibly off-putting. You have to memorize and practice inputs like crazy and also usually have to resort to exploiting glitches and clipping methods to get faster at it that when you do it for any extended period of time you'd want to kill yourself for what you're putting yourself through for a record attempt no sane person gives a fuck about.
The only instances of actual speedrunning I find decent are specific contained ones implemented by game devs themselves like in the N64 game Mischief Makers where it rates your time per stage with a ranking. Mostly superflueous as far as I know but this is done within expected skill of the player.
Speaking of N64 games:
DK64 was one of the worst games I had ever played during that period of time. Super boring and frustratingly arcane, but I was becoming disenchanted by the N64 collectathon crap. I’m glad it exists though because CBFD is one of the absolute best games on the N64 library.
Why would someone play DK64, the most divisive game in the series, when you have three mostly terrific games that you haven’t (or barely) played yet… especially in front of an audience? It’s not like he’s doing any “cool” glitches or anything either.
I can get why DK64 is so divisive and a clear case of ‘love it or hate it’ but while I did love it back in the day because I sort of liked the sense of exploration and getting the most out of the N64 games I owned, I will agree that the backtracking for colored banana’s can be on the tedious side. Most of the obnoxious stuff like Beaver Bother, the beetle and rabbit races can be ignored though.
While on the flipside I didn’t have much fond memories playing the latter half of CBFD. It’s fun for a first-time playthrough and witnessing all the crude dark humor unfold but by the time the zombie-infested mansion rolls around the game ups the ante with making it very easy to lose lives and the last section of the base escape segment on the beach was particularly frustrating with the rocket launcher enemies. Still don’t exactly hate it though but I wonder how the Twelve Tales version would have otherwise turned out to be difficulty-wise.
In the case of Chibi, I presume he’s playing DK64 because in terms of platforming it isn’t too hard and he sucks ass at 2D platformers if his DKC1 stream and his bitching during Mario Maker is any indication.
