Unless your samples were in Mexico I don’t think it’s applicable. Mexico is an entirely different animal vs how rehabs are run in USA/Canada, UK land, Western Europe…
It’s actually sort of interesting how things are run down there for Mexicans. There are dead balls serious rehabs, for free, that require 6 months “inpatient” stay. The accommodations are like nothing in the west. I can only compare them to jail/boot camp style living, but with lots of meetings. They certainly don’t let you sit on you ass for six months thinking things over, physical work/labor is a big part of program. There are govt funded programs but they seem sparse and people would rather go to jail.
There are other “rehabs” that require some private pay, but it’s basically jail. The cartels seem to use (and even run) these places to straighten out people that get hooked, instead of just killing them. This would be similar to how Ralph got clean while he was in jail in Virginia. You are basically in jail but with no drugs. (Mexico’s actual jails have all the drugs you could ever want). They are awful places and def a punishment. The whole private-pay Mexican system (for Mexicans) is a weird underworld and best to avoid, but I get the idea there isn’t a lot of choice in the matter for the people that end up in them.
There are some places in Mexico for western addicts that have $10-20k to spend for a sunny rehab stay with massages for 4-8 weeks, but that’s not in the Ralpha-budget. (Also, there are fewer than you would expect and they tend to be near the CA border, but Cancun has one) These places wouldn’t take your phone away. (Except maybe if the person paying the tab for the stay requested it. Who’s paying has a lot to do with the protocol.) But Ralph couldn’t afford these places.
Ralph mentioning the “$900 a month” very budget friendly rehab he miraculously had found in Mexico is what has me so curious.
It’s likely BS, but if not, I’m dying to know what he roped himself into. Even $900 a WEEK is budget friendly in Mexico, but a month!? There’s like a 1% he actually signed himself into one of the shady jail type rehabs. $900 a month is in the ballpark for those operations.
If so, paying to get himself out will be the issue, so he will def need his phone.
Sadly I think it’s all BS. He’s moving to Tijuana and thought $900 was a believable amount for Mexican rehab. The fact he didn’t have a fundraiser stream for rehab is also suspect. He did fundraising streams for lawyers, paternity tests, divorces, child visitation, to take breathalyzers, to eat Xanax, etc..but he’s not going to milk it to pay for rehab?) very odd.

$900 seems cheap for Ibogaine treatment. I know someone who did that and he paid several thousand dollars, though it was a few years ago. That does sound like something he’d try though. For what it’s worth, it worked for the person I knew (although his issue was suboxone, not benzos). Also, I don’t know how well that would work for someone who is facing seizures and brain zaps if he stops taking his drug of choice.

Ralph used to be more confrontational, now he only hollars at people that aren't there. Like Harry and Vickers. He was cool as a cucumber when Josh had that call with him but before and after it was nothing but seething and bellyaching about the farms. He hollared and wrote gay articles about Jim, then cried, literally tears running down his piggy face, when they actually went on stream. I don't know if his divorce from Nora broke him, but he was never the same after.

His lack of fluent Spanish, and fear of Mexican men, are the main reasons I think it’s not possible. Also usually someone that gives a fuck about your life sends you into one, not usually a voluntarily thing. But otoh the $900 price his right. Maybe his local lawyer plumber hooked him up!
However I will thank Ralph for sending me down a fascinating rabbit hole about Anexos - which is estimated to make up 90% of what constitutes “drug rehab” in Mexico. Simply put, there is absolutely no western model rehab available in Mexico, except for the very wealthy, and therefore the locals have created their own sort of rehab system to deal with drug addicts and out of control teens/ young men. It puts the old “scared straight” programs to shame. But it’s mostly for working class Mexicans.
A fat, middle aged American ending up in an Anexo would give Ralph a years worth of podcast content, but he’d never survive a week.
Heres an interesting interview about anexos and there’s even been an anthropological study published on them recently.
