Why would the autopay fail? Was the attached checking account closed? Insufficient funds? Error by the bank?

If it's insufficient funds, then at some point last year he had less than a mortgage payment worth of funds in his account.

Did they gouge out your eyes so you couldn't check your balance to see the money hadn't moved, Nick? Did they tear your mailbox out of the ground, cancel your phone service, and rip out the wires to your house so you could not receive notifications, and couldn't call to fix the autopay and make a phone payment, Nick? Did they ban stamps in Kandiyohi County, so you couldn't mail a check and a request to restart autopay, Nick?
