I think it's far more likely that the kid accidentally ingested some given how filthy the state of the house apparently was. Or she happened to see one of the adults do it and tried it herself cause she thought it was candy or something.

honestly this makes sense, from what little we knew Nick was really doing everything, Kayla was a fuck puppet and Nick cooked and cleaned and did everything else, eventually something had to give, Nick would have started making money or getting a life outside the family at some point.
