Pure ignorance. Your average Native American is just as mutted as the average Mexican or Squatemalan. They almost all have some English or French in them from the time a fur trader came by and the chief sold him his daughter in exchange for some guns or beads. Some Indians in the Southwest are almost totally Hispanic because of the missions and shit. The only real racial difference between Native Americans and Mexicans is the inherent racial distinction between American Indians and Mexican, Central American, etc. Indian because the Indio ancestors of Mexicans were of specific Margid racial type while American Indians are Silvid, Pacifid, etc. racial type. Indians who look like actual first Americans are practically non-existent. Even a century ago anthropologists noted that the last pureblooded Indians were dying off.
